OC/WR Coach Brian Hartline (Official Thread)

Which Buckeye had the greatest impact on the Ohio State history of the position he played?

  • Brian Hartline

  • Other (This is the wrong answer)

I remember walking through a crowded area before a game years ago and then running right into Brian and his (I'm assuming) mom pushing him against traffic in a wheel chair while on a visit as a high schooler. That kid is a position coach now.

I feel old.
If you want to actually feel old, ask any of the kids if they remember that era. Many recruits weren't even alive for Tressel's speech.

BRIAN HARTLINE IS OHIO STATE'S BEST OPTION TO REPLACE ZACH SMITH, FOR NOW

94572_h.jpg

Ohio State announced the firing of wide receivers coach Zach Smith on Monday night, leaving a vacancy on Urban Meyer's coaching staff just more than a month from the season opener against Oregon State.

Since the season is so close to kicking off, Meyer likely won't have time to hire Smith's immediate successor, which leaves quality control coach and former Ohio State receiver Brian Hartline as the most logical choice. According to Lettermen Row's Austin Ward, that is already the route Ohio State is planning to take.

Hartline was officially added to Meyer's staff in March of 2017 after his seven-year NFL career came to an end in May of 2016, when he was released by the Cleveland Browns. He spent the first six years of his professional career with the Miami Dolphins, compiling back-to-back 1,000-yard seasons in 2012-13.

Hartline, who played for the Buckeyes from 2005-08, is an Ohio native who played his high school football at Canton GlenOak, a staple in the most tradition-rich football county in the state. His already established relationship with the current wide receiver unit and playing experience makes a promotion, at least on an interim basis, a no-brainer for Ohio State.

HARTLINE'S CREDENTIALS
  • Ohio State wide receiver (2005-08)
  • Seven-year NFL veteran
  • Current Ohio State quality control coach
Should the Buckeyes make Hartline the interim wide receivers coach, he would likely have an entire season to make a case to be kept on permanently by Meyer, especially after the last few seasons in which the receiver play has come under much scrutiny. A productive year from the unit, with a first-year starter at quarterback behind center, could be enough for Meyer to remove Hartline's interim tag despite his inexperience as a coach.

At age 31, Hartline would be the youngest position coach on staff and the youngest assistant Meyer has had at Ohio State since Smith, who joined Meyer's staff in 2012 at the age of 28.

If Hartline doesn't work out, Meyer would immediately begin the search for a full-time replacement shortly after the upcoming season ends. If not Hartline, Ohio State has plenty of options.

One option Ohio State could entertain is bringing back Joker Phillips, who spent the 2016 season as an offensive quality control coach for the Buckeyes. The former Kentucky head coach (2010-12) has experience coaching at the NFL and college level and currently serves as the wide receivers coach for Luke Fickell at Cincinnati.

A more likely option, however, would be to pursue Billy Gonzales, who is currently the co-offensive coordinator and wide receivers coach at Florida. With a possible scenario of Ryan Day or Kevin Wilson soon leaving for a head coaching job, a spot could come open for Gonzales to take over the wide receiver unit as well as offensive play-calling duties.

Gonzales served as the wide receivers coach at Florida under Meyer from 2005-09 and also has experience coaching in the Big Ten, having spent the 2012 season at Illinois. Before moving with Dan Mullen back to Gainesville, Gonzales was the offensive coordinator at Mississippi State from 2013-17.

Lesmerises makes a good point. It's essential Hartline is a very good recruiter. Fickell to Davis is an obvious downgrade in terms of recruiting. Coombs to Johnson is most likely a downgrade. Sat what you want about Smith, he was an effective recruiter, and if Hartline can't meet his level, you have downgraded your recruiting in 3 positions of the coaching staff. That isn't good.

The guy that left Florida for LSU in 2010 with a Post-It note because he was pissed Meyer promoted Addazio ahead of him? No. Way.

You may want to give this one a year or 2. OSU is in on some big DB names for 2020, and also well see how he does this season and can continue the run of 1st round DBs too

And potentially upgraded with Grinch who could be a holy terror recruiting now that he has some ammunition. As to Hartline, he just has to not shyte the bed. The guy is from Ohio, played for tOSU, gutted it out when most counted him out and not only made it to the league, but balled out for awhile. All of that is a helluva base for a recruiter. Maybe he sucks at it, but I think it's too early to think he won't be able to pick it up.

He has to prove he can recruit.

URBAN MEYER, PARRIS CAMPBELL BELIEVE IN BRIAN HARTLINE'S FUTURE AS A COACH

94608_h.jpg

Ohio State hasn’t yet announced who will replace Zach Smith as its wide receivers coach for the upcoming season.

At this point, however, it will be a surprise if it’s anyone but Brian Hartline.

Hartline, a former Ohio State wide receiver (2005-08), joined the Buckeyes last year as a quality control coach and has been viewed as a potential successor to Smith ever since. And now that Smith has been fired less than six weeks before the start of the season, leaving the Buckeyes in a bind to make a quick hire and perhaps forcing them to hire from within, Hartline has emerged as the obvious candidate for the job, at least on an interim basis.

Although Lettermen Row’s Austin Ward reported Monday that Ohio State is planning to make Hartline the interim wide receivers coach, Buckeyes head coach Urban Meyer said Tuesday that report was premature, as he hadn’t even had the chance to meet with his staff yet since firing Smith on Monday.

Meyer did say, however, that he believes in Hartline’s ability to be successful as a coach going forward.

"He’s got potential to be an excellent coach," Meyer said. "Brian Hartline is a wonderful guy and works his tail off. Brian Hartline is a very important part of our staff."

Ohio State wide receiver Parris Campbell, who also met with reporters on Tuesday during Big Ten Media Days in Chicago, said he had not yet received word on who his new wide receivers coach would be. Campbell said, though, that he has already benefited from having the opportunity to work with Hartline since he joined the Buckeyes’ staff.

"He’s been with us for two years now, and he’s developed a relationship with all the guys in the room. Guys in the room, we love him," Campbell said. "He’s someone who’s already familiar with the way we go about things. With our men, with our culture, he’s been great. He’s adapted to us. He’s been there for two years. And we’ve grown a relationship, everyone has with him."

In between his career playing football for Ohio State and returning to the Buckeyes as a coach, Hartline spent seven seasons playing in the NFL – six with the Miami Dolphins, one with the Cleveland Browns – which gives him valuable experience that he can now share with Ohio State’s current wide receivers.

Campbell, who aspires to play in the NFL next year following his final season as a Buckeye, says he has appreciated having the opportunity to learn from someone who has been a wide receiver at that level.

"He’s played at the next level, dominated at the next level," Campbell said of Hartline, who had a pair of 1,000-yard receiving seasons for the Dolphins in 2012 and 2013. "He just brings a different mindset. He shares the things that he did in the NFL, and shares what the best of the best do in the league. And obviously getting that knowledge at the collegiate level is definitely going to benefit you."
