Q&A with Miami Dolphin Brian Hartline
South Florida Sun-Sentinel
May 7, 2009

(On how he feels after two practices) "I feel good. Definitely better than the first day, the first day felt rough, it always does, but day two felt a lot better."

(On the toughest adjustment) "I don't think that it's that so much, it's always learning new stuff and obviously I know nothing, so learning that stuff, learning the playbook, getting acclimated to the weather which is a little different this time of year for me but in the long run its going to help to keep getting better and its exciting."

(On what the past week has been like) "Got down before camp started towards the end of the week, before that just working out and running nothing in particular. I am still in class so I am taking classes but I keep working out and maintaining and I was getting excited for camp so I am glad that its finally here."

(On if it's hard juggling classes and football) "It is a little difficult. I'd be lying if I said otherwise, just because really it's a second priority now. School being a second priority still demands a lot, but this is my most important thing right now. Finishing up classes and also being focused on this has been a little difficult, but I am getting through it."

(On if his production last year worried him about his draft status) "I wasn't worried too much, but you always have that question mark in the back of your mind. You never know what everybody is thinking, but I think in the end that's why team have scouts and you go through the process, because just number and yards because just number and yards your pretty definitive right off the bat, so that is kind of the mindset that I was trying to keep and it worked out."

(On if he has talked to Ted Ginn) "I have, he came in yesterday so I got to see him a little bit, so we were excited to see each other. Still the same ole skinny Teddy, he's doing alright and we like giving each other 'stuff', so it's fun but I am excited to start playing with him."

(On what he and Ted Ginn talked about) "First thing he said to me is, 'make sure your conditioned', but like I witnessed this is a little different than Ohio in April. So that was one thing that he was definitely right on about. But again he just said know your playbook, work hard, the usual fundamentals of being successful and we will probably break it down a little more when we get with the rest of the team, but as of right now that is what he said to me."

Rookie Brian Hartline makes his Dolphins OTA debut
Harvey Fialkov | South Florida Sun-Sentinel
May 28, 2009

DAVIE - Dolphins rookie receiver Brian Hartline, the Dolphins fourth-round pick out of Ohio State, made his OTA debut Thursday, and seemed to catch on rather quickly.

"It's hard to play fast when you're still learning,'' said Hartline, who is also part of the punt returning unit. "First thing I do is learn the playbook.''

Hartline said he was able to find a loophole in the NCAA/NFL rule that prohibits rookies from attending organized practices until their college class graduates because his last course is an on-line class.

"He can bring a lot to the table,'' said receiver Ted Ginn Jr., who was three years ahead of Hartline at Ohio State and in Ohio inner-city high schools where the two competed in track events. "He's got to listen to everybody, learn the system and once he gets the system down his athleticism will take over.''

Receiver Greg Camarillo, who is way ahead of schedule in his rehabilitation of a torn knee ligament, said that Hartline impressed him.

"We're competing as a group to produce the best receives in camp,'' said Camarillo, who is participating in individual and some team drills. "I was impressed with how quickly he picked up the offense. It's hard to miss two weeks of installation and come right in. He did a pretty good job and I was impressed with his knowledge. It seems like he just has a solid football background, and that will help him.''

Ted Ginn Jr., who was three years ahead of Hartline at Ohio State and in Ohio inner-city high schools where the two competed in track events.

Ginn finished high school in '04 and played football at tOSU from the '04 through '06 seasons. Hartline finished high school in '05, had a redshirt year and then played football at tOSU from '06 through '08 seasons.

So he's either 1 or 2 years behind Ginn, but not 3.

Dolphins head coach Tony Sparano's comments at Thursday's OTA
Transcript provided by the Miami Dolphins
May 28, 2009

(On his impression of seeing Brian Hartline on the field) "Yeah, it was good to get him out here, actually today was his first day back. It was good to have him back out here and get him in the mix. Obviously, he got behind from an install standpoint, and this was a hard one to jump back in the middle of with what we tried to get accomplished here today, but he did a nice job. That really is a strength of his, he's a smart guy, so he can catch on fairly easily."

Not only did Jeff Ireland and Sparano bring Chad Henne on the road for predraft workouts with receivers from Florida, Ohio State, North Carolina and Maryland, but Henne said they also solicited his input on ''who I liked.'' Henne gave a strong endorsement for Ohio State's Brian Hartline, who Miami then drafted. ''He has tremendous hands -- that stuck out in the workout,'' Henne said.

Florida Sports Buzz: Dolphins GM likes roster's depth
By BARRY JACKSON
[email protected]

Dolphins management doesn't do many interviews, but general manager Jeff Ireland assessed his team during a conversation:

Did you pass on available big-name veteran receivers because you think you're good enough there? ''Not necessarily,'' he said, though he later added he now is comfortable with the position.

''A lot of things come into play when you're passing up players that will take some compensation to get and money to sign. We didn't want to give up either one of those to go after a front-line receiver. We felt really good about the two guys we drafted. Patrick Turner has done a heck of a job. Brian Hartline jumps out at you -- the first two days, he makes two big plays. And we feel good about some of the receivers'' already here.

Brian Hartline: Hartline is another Ohio State wide-receiver on the Dolphins roster. His contributions in year one should be on special teams where he is capable of playing on both sides of the kick-off team. A smart cerebral WR, Hartline is expected to pick up the playbook fairly easy. He resembles Indy?s Anthony Gonzalez who also played for OSU.

Hartline is hard-headed and loves to hit people. In his post-draft interview, Hartline made mention of his desire to just get on the field and hit someone. Not exactly the type of talk you expect from a WR. It?s that attitude that makes him a good candidate for the final roster.

Hartline is going to have to play very good on special teams to make the active 53 and it very well could be his training camp performance that dictates the future of Ernest Wilford. With the Dolphins likely to keep no more than 5 WR?s?at best?Hartline could steal away that final position. If not, the Dolphins will keep their fingers crossed and try and hide him on the practice squad.

Final predictions: 53 man roster - 5 WR?s: Ginn, Bess, Camarillo, Turner, and Hartline. Practice squad - Brennan Marion. Cut - Wilford, London, and Williams.

Barring injury to one of the top 3, I do not expect the Dolphins to explore adding any other WR?s before the start of training camp or the start of the season.

UPDATE: Tony Sparano spoke about the WR situation saying that the upcoming cuts to the unit will be some of the hardest he will make. He indicated that the team ?could? keep up to 6 WR but I still find that an unlikely scenario.

Hartline is drawing rave reviews in Miami, where he is one of six receivers on the roster along with former Buckeye Ted Ginn Jr.

"It's a do or die business; that's the real eye-opener," Hartline said of the NFL. "At Ohio State, we had 110 players. In Miami, there are 80 guys and 27 of them are going to get cut. I couldn't imagine cutting 27 of these guys. But I'm not the first guy to go through this and I won't be the last."

Dolphins Sign 4th Round WR Brian Hartline

A league source has confirmed that the Miami Dolphins have signed fourth-round wide receiver Brian Hartline.

While financial terms were not disclosed, through playing time and team performance incentives, the four-year deal could be worth nearly $4 million dollars.

The former Ohio State University standout took over a starting job in 2007 and finished the season with 52 receptions for 694 yards and 6 touchdowns. A change to a run-first quarterback last season resulted in a significant drop in Hartline's production. Having already earned an undergraduate degree, Hartline opted for the NFL after his redshirt-junior season.

During his career with the Buckeyes, the North Canton, Ohio-native posted 90 receptions for 1,429 yards and 12 touchdowns.

Hartline is the fifth of the Dolphins' nine draft choices to sign a contract.
