Observations from C Deck (Iowa 2005)

Observations from 26AA:

1. The run/pass tip from the running back in the shot gun should be fixed right away. If the RB needs to be a yard behind Troy on the running plays, put him there on passing plays. And, it's not just Pittman....Wells was doing it too, so they're actually being told to stand there. This has to be corrected.

2. The defense is almost embarassing. There were two guys sitting behind us - one OSU fan and one Iowa fan. Both cool guys, and the Iowa fan took his beating like a man. But, he started moaning that this just wasn't fair. To a certain standpoint, I see where he's coming from. At times, it felt like Iowa was sending a bunch of junior high kids out to play an NFL team. And then, when the Buckeyes blitzed, I found myself thinking "poor, poor, Tate. He just doesn't stand a chance." Then I remembered 33-7, and saw him crying like a baby on the sidelines, and I wanted Heacock to send everybody on the next play.

3. I was on TV! That was cool.

4. The Iowa fan was absolutely blown away by the overall Horseshoe/gameday environment. He was completely in awe.

5. I have had tickets in 25C for 24 years. This is my first season out of that section, and it's way down in the second row of 26AA. This is the first time I've spent a game looking at the freaking HUGE pressbox. And the stadium looks so much bigger, and it sounds so much louder, and the players hit so much harder. It's really very amazing. The bad part is, everything appears to be moving so much faster that it's difficult to pick up on the open receivers, or the holding no-calls, or the missed blocks. Still, I can't imagine a more intimidating stadium environment.

6. Isn't it cool that Rob Harley's on the team? I think that's cool.

7. How often can you say that an OSU offense racked up 400 yards of total offense? Not as often as I'd like. How often can you say that an OSU offense racked up 400 yards MORE THAN THE OTHER TEAM?!?! I don't think I can ever remember a time. Granted, the game ended with Iowa about 390 short of OSU's total, but there were moments in the game where OSU's total was more than 400 yards higher than Iowa's total.

8. I still like Ferentz. He whined quite a bit on a pass interference no-call, but he's still a classy guy. I especially liked his quote of "we took it on the chin today. If we had two chins, we would have taken it on both of them." He'll be back.

9. Huston drilled that 47 yarder. It had plenty of distance. DAMN IT!!! I wish he would have squeezed that Texas FG in there. He's another great kicker. I wish we could have him for a 7th year.

10. Back in 2001, I thought the Alma Matter thing at the end of the game was cheesy and stupid. I stand corrected. It's definitely a very cool tradition. I'm always amazed at how many people stick around, and I'm always amazed at how loud everyone sings.

When we were running pittman late in the 3rd and early in the 4th quarter on 1st and 2nd down...everyone started booing. We were up 24-6...so I don't get it why everyone is booing? The point is to win the game...and that's it. What do you think was going to happen? We run the ball, run time off the clock, and Iowa comes back and scores 3 TDs against our defense? Iowa couldn't score 3 TDs against our defense in 3 games...let alone one quarter. Our offense though had turned the ball over a few times, and a turnover was the only way Iowa was getting back in the game. I cheered the playcalling at that point. We had already won the game...no need to run up the score agaisnt a team that we see every year. I heard one guy yelling, "Screw this crap! Stick with what got you the lead!" Pittman had over 150 yards rushing at that point...he had a big hand in getting us the lead...he secured the ball and ran well...keep giving him the ball I say.

And for those who say we never put a team away...we put this team away early, and never even let them come up for any air...EVER!

Iowa had two plays inside the OSU 50 prior to the middle of the third quarter. One of those plays was the result of a 15 yard penalty for unsportsman like conduct on Mangold, tacked on to the end of a fumble recovery run. If they started on their own 20 Iowa was unable drive more than one first down further. Again, the offense had great starting position all day long and this time did something with it.

I believe that penalty was on Datish.

I'm interested in seeing Jeff Amey's breakdown by play type and formation this week. From my seats in the SS, we were able to run the ball much more effectively from the 4-WR sets than from the I-formation. There was 1 notable exception (Pittman went about 29 yards down the left side out of the 'I' on a play).

When we put 3 WRs on 1 side, Iowa would have 4 defenders out wide, and man coverage on the opposite side. That only left 6 in the box, and we got a lot of rushing yards on those plays. I would expect other Big-10 teams to only put 3 men on the side of our 3-WR sets. Then hopefully our passing game makes them pay.

It seemed like running out of the 'I' was much less effective, especially between the tackles.

But that's nitpicking - it was an excellent offensive performance overall. Some work on ball security and play clock problems will obviously be done over the next few practices.

One final note on the offense. The play where Troy did a quick pump fake, then handed off to Pittman on a misdirection, was great to see. I think it got about 20 yards in a second and 19 situation, but the faking combined with the misdirection was a welcome sight.

It seemed to me that JT actually reacted to the fans who were foolishly booing conservative running plays when we were correctly protecting the lead and killing the clock in the 4th quarter. He had JZ throw the ball on 3rd down with about 20 to 25 seconds left. Any running play (ending in-bounds) would have ended the game, but I think JT didn't want to hear any boos on the last play of the game. So he throws on 3rd, and then the change of possession stops the clock after 4th down with 13 seconds left. So Iowa picks up a few garbage yards on the last 2 plays.

It's sad that a few idiots prevent us from being able to take a knee and get nothing but cheers after such a dominating performance.

I would submit, however, that any penalty was probably unwarranted in that instance. Tate was hit hard all day and that play was no exception. He may very well have thought he was getting up from scoring a TD.
 great post overall

JamO has to know that Ginn can break that tackle by himself.

That was a poorly reffed game. Some bad calls that went our way, and complete disregard for holds all day long (maybe they wanted to save Tate's life).

Before the game, I spied both Brandon Underwood and Curt Lukens in warm ups along with the rest of the injured (Cordle, Lyons, D'Andrea, Nicol, Jordan, ect.). Hadn't heard that either of those 2 were hurt prior to the game and found that interesting.

GREAT post Oh8ch. I'd have given ya rep, but I just recently gave ya rep for another great post ya had the other day. Me thinks you're spot on with your observations.

Oh man, I don't know about that (Not that I disagree, I just don't know). I would be interested in what everyone has to say. On the replay, I thought the gunner would have lit Ginn up had JamO not nudged him.

2. AA Linebackers

Looks like the boys from Iowa City showed us up. Greenway and Hodge had 23 tackles between them while Hawk and Carpenter could only muster 13. Nit-pickers will argue that OSU ran 24 more plays and gave them more opps. Others will suggest that Linebackers should shoulder some of the blame for a 323 yard difference in rushing yards. But we all know where the Butkus Award should go.

I was particularly impressed to see Greenway celebrating after one particularly stellar tackle – with his team down 24-0. (Does anybody else think that players on either O or D ought to maintain a low profile when the scoreboard shows they are getting their asses kicked?)

Not sure if you're poking fun at Iowa with the "showed us up" comment, but I think it's obvious we had better play from our LBs.

Make no mistake, Hodge is a stud. I haven't re-watched the second half yet, but Hodge was all over the place making plays in the first. He just had to make them further down field than he'd like. Both Hodge and Greenway had a lineman in their face the majority of the half. Kudos to our OL. Greenway didn't impress nearly as much and had a hard time getting off the block. I'm guessing he's much better when 'clean' and can run to the play. Hodge will make a great pro ... in traffic or in space. With the Dline they have in front of them, Hodge and Greenway will have a ridiculous amount of tackles by the end of the season ... they will just come 3-7 yards on their side of the LOS.
:wink2:
