NOTRE DAME AT OHIO STATE
10682209.jpg

Early prediction: Ohio State 38, Notre Dame 24

College Football Playoff implications. This one's dripping with national relevance for two programs we've included near the top of our preseason bowl projections. Ryan Day matched up with Notre Dame first-year coach Marcus Freeman is worth the watch, eye-candy on offense versus the Fighting Irish's new-look D. Ohio State had a chance last season to overcome an early-season loss to Oregon in a similar non-conference showdown at home, but saw its opportunity crumble at Michigan. Perhaps the Buckeyes take the more advantageous road this time around and put pressure on Notre Dame to win out in order to reach the final four.

Ohio State quarterback C.J. Stroud is already a well-known fixture nationally, but the preseason Heisman candidate could take a sizable leap forward in the race with a four-touchdown performance against Notre Dame. It's also the first time we'll see the Buckeyes' revamped defense under Jim Knowles, who has tried to simplify things a bit and put the unit's best athletes in position to make plays. He was adept at doing just that at Oklahoma State and now has better players to carry out his scheme. Freeman's only game as coach thus far, oddly enough, was a bowl-season loss to that same Oklahoma State defense.

OSU’s top game is Michigan. Always has been and probably always will be. But if some of you get your way and Michigan fades into obscurity then Penn State will become their top game. You know, because they’re OSU’s second biggest rival like it or not. :p

But of course the ND game is huge and Marcus being their head coach makes it an even bigger deal. OSU has a cold rivalry with ND because they rarely play each other but, for the most part, the fans still hate each other. (A pox on any Buckeye fans who root for ND. I say “Go Blue!” when Michigan plays the domers.”)

I spent my adolescence in northern Indiana not far from South Bend and I learned to dislike Notre Dame fans at an early age. They had no respect for OSU even after Archie won back-to-back Heismans. Those victories in ‘95 and ‘96 were especially sweet (not to mention the ones that have come after). Haven’t heard any smack talk since.

This will be a big game in terms of national attention but I’m not worried at all. ND hasn’t been a threat to the OSU since 1936 and if Gene Smith were a competent AD then he would’ve self-imposed a postseason ban in 2011 and the Buckeyes would’ve beat the Irish in the BCS National Championship Game in 2012. A blowout wouldn’t surprise me.

I like to laugh at both teams in that game. I'm terrible with which year was which, but didn't Gardner throw a 0-yard pick-6 one year? That was awesome. And it wasn't like the one Ohio State got against Michigan State, where he tipped the ball up and got the interception. This was a linebacker diving for a pass that was attempted to be thrown away to avoid a sack. And I think the line of scrimmage was around the 20 yard line.

I can't root for *ichigan. I guess I did in 2005 when they were playing Penn State, but that was because a Penn State loss put Ohio State back in 1st place (tied) for the conference championship. And maybe a couple of times since then. But a *ichigan win doesn't help Ohio State in any way. So eff those effers.

Go to about 10:37 of this video:

*ichigan had 2nd and 7 from the 20. He lost 4 yards (should have been more) to bring up a 3rd and 11 from the 16. Then instead of taking a 16-yard sack for a safety, he throws it where #7 can make a diving catch. Awesome.
