Notre Dame (football only discussion)

Again...the Purdue that just lost at home to Northern Illinois?

Don't get me wrong, I 'd love to see Purdue beat the shit out of ND...I just don't see it happening.
While true they layed an egg against NIU, it may have been a let down game after playing Oregon tough in Autzen (36-38 L). Before that they layed 52 on Toledo, so I think they might have the horses to keep up with, or even upset NoD...particularly if Jimmah can't go. Should be interesting.

I thought that all three Big Ten teams might beat Notre Dame. Sparty being Sparty was a real disappointment.

Purdue has a problem on defense. Looking at the numbers, it looks like a Purdue is a touchdown underdog. But, if Speedo Jimmy is not firing on all cylinders and a favorite receiver is out of the game, maybe Purdue can pull this one out.

Still, I think I will be about as surprised as Mili if they do.

Clausen has turf toe and is limping. Floyd is gone for the season. They could be in some much tougher games now. They could really struggle to win 7-8 games. At Purdue won't be an easy game for them.

Try as hard as I can I can't see more than two more Ls in that schedule, so at worst they're 9 and 3 and taking a BCS slot.

I thought the ND rule was that they had to be a BCS top 12 with at least 9 wins? If this ends up the kind of year where a lot of teams have 2-3 losses it might not make the 9 wins part an automatic BCS bid.

Regardless, I'm not counting out the fat man just yet. If he can lose at home to Syracuse last year he can lose to anyone. Lets call USC a very likely loss. That leaves a pool of Purdue, Washington, BC, Navy and a road game at Pitt to look for the 2 losses from.

That's not a murderers row but they are each capable of beating what is still a very average ND team who just lost one of their best players for the season.

I do, sadly, think that if big boy misses a BCS Bowl with that schedule they will fire him. :(

The ND specific rule is that they get an automatic if they're in the top-8. That rule's meaningless, if they're in the top-8 they'd always get picked.

The relevant rule is that they need to have 9 wins and be in the BCS top-14 to be eligible for an at-large bid - but that rule applies to every BCS Conference team that doesn't win their (automatic-qualifying) conference. The top-12 only applies to the highest rated Mtn West/WAC/MAC/Conf-USA/Sun Belt team.

So there's no reason for anybody to whine about ND having special rules for the BCS (not saying you were, Jax, but it's a common complaint). If they're top-8 they deserve it, otherwise they're subject to the same rule as everybody else.

The problem is that their name gets them at-large bids over other more deserving teams in the top-14 - but others make the same claim about tOSU.

Wasn't that changed to top-16?

Nevermind: It's top-12 to get an automatic bid, or, if there are no champions of a mid-major conference in the top-12, but there is a champion of a mid-major conference in the top-16 AND that team is ranked ahead of a BCS-conference champion, then that team is in. That's the part I was thinking about.

That rule has always bugged me. The non-BCS team isn't in the top-12, so they don't deserve a spot. But if a BCS Champ is below a top-16 non-BCS team, then the non-BCS team gets a bid.

So they won't take a bad team for the BCS unless a worse team is already in the BCS, forcing the BCS bowls to have 2 bad teams in a year with a weak BCS Conference Champ.
