Notre Dame Fighting Irish (official thread of bowl failures)

But he was not caught breaking the law in public. He was 'presumably' drinking a beer at a frat house or apartment. The pictures show nothing more than him holding a plastic cup while standing around a kitchen table with a bunch of other guys.

18-20 year old college kids drink beer. Hell, 15-18 year old high school kids drink beer. The whole thing is a non-issue. The only questionable aspect of the matter is whether Charlie Weis has punished him for the ole "violation of team rules," and whether Clausen has finally had it hammered into his greasy, spiked head that the QB of Notre Dame will always be under more scrutiny than any other college football player in America. He needs to learn that that was part of the deal when he took the scholarship. Charlie could just as well have 'disciplined' him with some gassers or stadium steps, and we'll never be any wiser.

I don't know what publicly admonishing him based on Internet innuendo solves. I don't see what people are so indignant about.

I don't think people are indignant about Clausen drinking but rather about the way that Domer fans traditionally jump on players from other universities for small problems and then assert their great academic standing and discipline. Now, when Clausen gets caught out, "Gosh, what's the problem?" It's the double standard of the fans that is the problem, not Clausen drinking.

I might add that a lot of folks here forget that NDC was among the few fans from other teams that didn't dump all over Ohio State during the Clarett years. Of course, his more recent behaviour made it easy to forget...

That said, if underage drinking is illegal, it's illegal, whether in public or not. It used to be legal for 18 year olds to drink in many states, at least 3.2% alcohol beer, anyway. It isn't anymore and the reason is because of the number of deaths in this age group while intoxicated.

So, please don't count me among the indignant at Clausen. My reaction is to the holier than thou attitude of Domer fans in reaction to this incident.

I'm sure that underage drinking is an issue for all college athletics programs, but what makes this case stand out for me is Weis' arrogance in trying to sweep it under the rug. In his comments, he only states that he doesn't condone underage drinking. He makes no mention of the team, the athletic department rules, or the university. Then he just stonewalls questions with, "Let's move on.". All he had to say was, "We're looking into it.", It's being handled internally.", or even "I haven't had a chance to look at it thoroughly.", etc, etc. Being a college football head coach is a world's difference from being a coordinator for a NFL team. A college HC is the public face of the team and a representative of the university, if Weis doesn't want, or can't handle, that responsibility, he should not have taken the job. Period. The vast majority of coaches would have handled the questions in a succinct and professional manner. Weis seems to think that such things are below him. If his ego makes him incapable of managing such a simple PR issue, I think it's only a matter of time until his ND career implodes in dramatic fashion.

Are you a mind reader ?? I am sure Charlie "handled it" just because he said "let's me on" does not mean he did nothing. Maybe just maybe he did not want to share it all........

I never said that Weis didn't do anything about the situation, I said he botched the press conference. Though, this exchange does imply that they were given a free pass:

Q. The website said they were participating in something called the Beer Olympics.
COACH WEIS: I said let's give them a break and let's move on. That's as far as I'm going to say. I'm not going to take it any further than that.

Whether he let it slide or threw the book at them, it's a poor choice of words and attitude. I also said nothing about him giving full disclosure. Tressel doesn't give out much info about internal team issues, but he handles the questions in a professional and amicable manner, and the press and fans accept that he will do what is right. When a public figure responds to a routine question from reporters with a big, fat "I don't have to answer that.", it only exacerbates the situation. There is an automatic implication that something is being hidden, whether that's right or wrong. Most coaches are privvy to the fact that the recitation of stock interview fodder along the lines of "You throw the ball, you hit the ball, you catch the ball." can diffuse nearly any situation. Chuck probably won't feel any backlash from this situation because it's so minor, but if he continues to handle things like this, I have to believe the alumni base will start to question whether he's the right man to represent their beloved institution.

Yes, I am a mind reader. No, you're not smarter than all those jerks at BP.

The thing is, all he had to say was "That's been resolved by the coaching staff, next question" and then it's just speculation. Maybe he did resolve it internally and made the kid be little spoon for a few nights, who knows, but Charlies attitude is really what this whole discussion is about.

Any vbets on Notre Dame? Something like over/under of 4 wins or whether fatty is still the coach after the season.

I think they need to make a bowl game or he is gone at the end of the year...that said, they have enough CREMEPUFFS on their schedule this year that 6 wins is almost a guarantee, so I'd say the chances of him getting fired are almost zero. He'll have to go Gerry Faust to get fired.
