LAST MEETING Michigan State won 31-10 last season in South Bend, Ind., and has won eight of the past 11 games in the series. Notre Dame leads overall 44-26-1.
THE SKINNY The Irish look to be on the road to recovery after a dreadful 2007 season. Notre Dame's 18-point victory over Michigan -- though the Wolverines clearly are rebuilding -- was impressive.
Quarterback Jimmy Clausen still has plenty of room to improve, as evidenced by his four interceptions so far. But he has also thrown for five touchdowns. Golden Tate, who had only six catches last season, has emerged as Clausen's favorite target with 10 catches for 220 yards and two touchdowns.
"I think their football team is playing with a lot of confidence," Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio said. "They seem to be having a lot of fun playing right now. Their quarterback is obviously much improved from last year when we played them.
