Notre Dame 40, MICHIGAN ST. 37 (Final)

This is a quote from spartantailgate.com in the topic "Biggest choke in MSUFB history" and really sums up the MSU program under JLS:

You know what really sucks? We have to think about if this hellified implosion is the worst ever? There shouldn't be anything worse than this but there probably is. It's like it's a competition

That is sad, no way should they slander Stanton for his performance. He had a tremendous first half, it looks like the coaches went conservative on us in the 2nd though and it cost them. His first interception would have been a sack if he hadn't gotten the ball away, my guess is he just tried to get the ball out in the hopes it landed incomplete or his receiver got it. The 2nd interception wasn't so much his fault as it was a lucky bounce off a defender and Lambert was there ready again to pick the ball up.

Wow, lotta holding there about halfway through the 4th on MSU, 4 plays in a row and 3 of them were called for blatant holding (the 3rd wasn't called, but 77 definitly had a handful of jersey). Don't get me wrong, it can be expected in a game like this, any team will pull out all the stops to finish out a tough game...but I'm almost curious if the holding was intentional though. MSU was milking time off the clock when they drew the holding penalties, they may have been moving backwards, but the time still ticked off. Perhaps it was actually a strategy to keep the Irish offense off the field when they had gotten the momentum?

I've lost what little respect I've had for MSU for blowing that HUGE lead. Pathetic, no way else to put it.
Nothing new or suprising, S.O.S., Same Old Sparty. This just may be the one that costs John L. his job though. Hey, I hear there might be a job opening up in Coral Gables.

Also, the fan behavior on the message boards is inexcusable. I don't know where the moderators were/are, but that was shameful.

:edit: Six hours later, and the thread in question is still on the board.:shake:

There are two words that are not in John L. Smith's vocabulary: defense and discipline.

And it isnt like he doesnt have some atheletes on that defense, and we can all see that he has plenty on offense. It is just a complete breakdown in coaching. The coverage was blown all night long, or ND probably only scores 20 points. Even the offensive scheme as it got late into the 3rd quarter looked as if a high school coach was calling it. When they were running vertical with that big back of theirs, ND couldnt begin to stop it. So what is the best thing to do? Well, stop running him vertical of course. Run everything wide and lose yardage. I mean that's what any smart coach would do.

From the Lansing State Journal - grading MSU's performance
Ouch!!

State Journal columnist Todd Schulz grades the Spartans on their 40-37 loss to Notre Dame on Saturday:

Offense: C-. Spectacular first half. Just six points in the second. The last three possessions ended in turnovers by the star quarterback.

Defense: D. MSU stopped the run and held strong on third down, but suffered too many breakdowns and allowed same old big plays.

Special teams: C. The Spartans recovered a fumbled punt to set up a score but didn't do much else.

Coaching: D. The ingredients : a rowdy crowd an emotional anniversary and, oh yeah, a 17-point lead were there for the upset. The MSU staff wasted them.
Would it be too harsh to suggest that a "D" grade for coaching is, well, lenient after a collapse of this magnitude??

EDIT: This huge collapse was replayed on ESPN Classic from 9 - Noon
