To me, this game, more than anything, has sealed the fate of the Notre Dame program.
For years now- Pretty much since as long as I've been alive- Notre Dame has been a shadow of its former self. They had been fairly mediocre for quite a while until Charlie Weis got there in 2005.
He was supposed to revive their program and bring it back to the golden days. They hadn't won a bowl game in who knows how long. They were averaging, what, 7 wins a season? In short, they were a mid-Big10 team consistently. Absurdly consistently.
2005 came, and ND had a pretty good season. Charlie Weis really did appear to be a pretty good coach, albeit incredibly arrogant. They almost beat USC, and while certainly that wasn't worth a contract extension (
), it was a very respectable performance.
Then bowl season came. Charlie Weis showed off his ridiculous arrogance again when he talked about his super bowl rings vs Tressel's BCS ring. But Notre Dame could take a little arrogance in their head coach, because this was the guy who was finally going to turn their program around. Actually win a bowl game, and against a major opponent no less.
Of course, we all know they lost by 14.
Then 2006 game... A little worse. He'd still need time to build up that program to be truly elite.
Then 2007, a complete disaster.
But even in 2007, I think there was a little bit of hope. Sure, they were god-awful- but in 2008 they would probably get at least 8 or so wins with a ridiculously easy schedule, and the Cheeseburger HAD been recruiting insanely well- by 2009 they should be loaded with talent and ready to make an actual impressive run.
This game showed more than anything that Notre Dame is just never going to be what they were. Sure, maybe they will be for a year or two at a time. But they're done as a major program. They lost to SYRACUSE ?!
There are absolutely no more excuses. This game more than anything shows the final and unignorable truth. Notre Dame is simply not good at all.
They do not have a good coach. They haven't had one for YEARS. Any coach worth having DOES NOT WANT TO GO THERE. Notre Dame didn't love Weis: he was the best they could get. That means that when they fire him... They'll have to go for someone WORSE. People don't want the job!
The talent is overrated. They've certainly got talent- they've got some great receivers, hell, I wish we could get Floyd. But overall, their talent is simply not nearly as good as people think it is. A recruit signs with notre dame, they shoot up rivals/scout lists and get invited to AA games. Doesn't mean they're any better then they were before they signed. Given the way ND develops talent, that probably means they're soon to be worse than they were before they signed.
There's simply no ignoring the fact that Notre Dame is gone. What are they going to do? Keep Charlie? He will continue to run Notre Dame into mediocrity. Eventually he won't even be able to recruit well. People will be too fed up with his arrogance and lack of any kind of results to show for it to want to go there.
Are they going to fire him? Pony up millions of dollars to hire... Who? Nobody wants to go to a school with expectations that high and chances of reaching them that low. Recruits want to go to schools that win. Notre Dame is not one of those schools. And what recruit wants to go to a school that uses their talent horribly? Their recruits might be overrated but they're sure as hell better than Syracuses'. And the whole "we're young, I need time!" doesn't work anymore. Flat-out doesn't. Not after Nick Saban's run at Bama, Meyer's at Florida, hell, Tressel's at tOSU. Charlie Weis is simply a terrible coach, and he's the best they could get.
