In the 2025 college football season, several 5-7 teams declined bowl bids, including Florida State, Auburn, UCF, Baylor, Kansas, Rutgers, and Temple, primarily to focus on player development and the transfer portal, disrupting bowl-filling efforts for games like the Birmingham Bowl. Birmingham Bowl: Georgia Southern (now 7-6) 29 defeated Appalachian State (now 5-8) 10.

Just sayin': When 5-7 gets you into a bowl game (needless to say) there are just too many bowl games.

ESPNs ever so great FPI has 5-7 Miss State ranked 17 SPOTS above 8-4 Wake Forest lol. You'll have people from the same company that uses the FPI to pimp the SEC still claiming this was a mismatch favoring Wake Forest though even though their own biased ranking system says otherwise
