No Reservations w/ Anthony Bourdain

I think one of the reasons he was so utterly fearless and had no fucks to give was because he found success so late in life and didn't feel that the needed to compromise himself and avoid offending the powerful to cling to it because it was all he'd ever known.
I know a handful of people who have overcome addiction, and specifically addiction to opiates/heroin.... I think a lot of what you've seen in Bourdain is that same element I've seen in others... when you've hit that rock bottom and come back from it... it changes your views. Meaning, "what do I have to lose? I've already been to hell" It can be used to a great benefit, or so I've seen with this handful of folks. What's to fear?

Bumping this because Bourdain deserves better than the celebrity obit thread. This is the first celebrity death I've actually felt. I'm watching an episode with Ripert now and they just got done talking about death and enjoying life and living in the moment because you'll never know what's next. Damn :( :([/MEDIA]

I watched the same episode of "Parts Unknown" (Marseille, France) and the talk of death really got to me too.

It's Bourdain's dark sense of humor on the talk-overs that I'm going to really miss. The ones where he wouldn't be afraid to say, "Rachael Ray still sucks," or make fun of Gordon Ramsay and his shows.

And all of the food scenes and his descriptions were basically Food Porn. I've never found such enjoyment in watching someone eat cheese. I'm really going to miss Bourdain.

Just thinking about memories of the various fishing scenes -- and their mishaps -- makes me smile today.

Celebrity deaths usually don't register too deep with me. Prior to the last 12 months, you'd have to back to Sinatra for one that I really felt. But John Glenn, Don Rickles and now Bourdain has been like a triple nut punch, and at least with the former two, you could say that their deaths were hardly unexpected.
