NIT: #1 Ohio State vs. #3 Dayton, Wed. 9 pm at the Schott ( ESPN2)

I was incredibly impressed with Roberts. It seemed like we did a very good job containing him, and then you look up at the box score and he scored 20 points on an off shooting night. I cringed every time he took a three, and was very impressed by his midrange game. Any UD fans know if/where he is projected in the draft?

I thought both Roberts and Butler got away with a lot of forearm shoving in that game. Didn't decide the outcome.

I would say that he is on the outside of the draft looking in right now. It does help him that he switched to the point guard spot. He is prolly too small for a 2 guard in the NBA. He will need the right situation to succeed in the NBA, he isn't the type of guy that will knock you out with athletisism.

I disagree on the sour grapes. I haven't seen anything unreaaonable in tlangs posts regarding the game. He pointed out a couple of things that OSU did well last night that were major factors in the victory.

KK DID have a very good night and hits some shots that he hasn't always made this season. Got a good bounce on a hook, knocked down his long baseline jumpers. 9-11 is unusually good for him. He's shooting less than 50% from the field for the season, but shot 80+% last night. If he goes 5 or 6 of 11 instead of 9-11.....

Diebs went 2-4 from three. Monday, he went 0-4. How does the game turnout if he misses all 4?

I don't see anything wrong with pointing out that a couple guys for OSU played better than usual last night and that contributed to the victory.

Saying OSU played its best defensive game of the year, complaining that KK and Diebler were on fire more so in this game than in any other (when, as has been pointed out, anyone who watches a little basketball knew Dayton would have trouble matching up with KK and he's been playing well lately; not to mention that Diebler going 2-4 from three is hardly "lighting it up" and everyone ignores the fact that he did the exact same thing two games ago against UNC-Asheville), and whining about the refs. Implicit in his list is that OSU simply "got lucky" last night, and it certainly couldn't be the case that OSU was the better team. That, quite simply, is sour grapes.

You don't think OSU got a little lucky? They caught Roberts on a bit of and off-night (for him). In addition, a couple other breaks:

Koufos was hot. Last night was his 2nd 20+ since mid-December. He averages 14 points on 11.7 shots per game, and scored 21 on 11 shots. He has been knocking down those shots all year, but not as consistently as he did last night.

Diebler made a couple shots. Before last night, he had made just 6 of his last 27 3-point attempts and was shooting less than 29% for the year. He's had 9 games this season where he's attempted at least 4 3's and made none. It's been 5+ weeks since he hit double figures. Last night WAS a hot night for him.

All I'm saying is that if guys like KK and Diebler played at their season averages, the game would have been much closer and Dayton may have won.

One other note, I didn't see it as whining about the officials. I read it as saying that Roberts has a knack for getting to the line, but he didn't do enough to get to the line. Not saying he should have been at the line X number of times last night, just that he has the ability to penetrate and draw fouls and he didn't do that.

Seriously, I just don't see that the UD guys are saying anything outrageous that warrants any unpleasantness towards them.

What's worse is that BG decided to take Warren over the Brazelton kid that is lighting up the tourney for Western Kentucky...

Can't lie... I'm disappointed with the outcome... I wish we would've showed in the second half like we did in the first... Credit the Bucks for making the necessary adjustments at the break... Poor defense by us and hot shooting for you guys in the second half made the difference...

I didn't like anything about the Koufos match-up going in and it proved to be what I thought... Didn't expect him to shoot 90%, but I knew it would be a tough guard for the Flyers...

I do have a question for everyone... Has Butler always extended his off arm on the dribble to create separation? I saw him do it at least 7 times last night and not get called which was frustrating to me... (And yes, I know that Roberts got away with A push-off on Lighty, but the key word is A)...

This was not our "Super Bowl" as some of you have suggested... Were we excited? Of course... Would the victory have meant more to us than it did to you? No doubt... We've been wanting to get you guys on the schedule for years (hang-up has always been that you don't want to play a return game at the Arena)... Many Dayton fans are also tOSU fans, so a lot of us were just excited to see our favorites go head to head for the first time in a long time...

Not picking up Brazelton is disappointing but I thought we went with Sandoval instead of him. Either way I wish Dayton would take more shots at JUCO players.

Dayton's back up point guard is one of the seven wonders of the world. I like London Warren and think he has a place on this team as a change of pace guy. Almost like a 3rd down back or back up running back in the NFL. I think most of the guys playing the SWBL are better shooters than London. I've never seen a guard in division one basketball who's as limited offensively as him. It's incredible that he has a scholarship or even plays organized hoops. It's often times 4 on 5 when he's out there.

I like the athleticism Dayton has but I really miss guys like Brooks Hall, Ramod Marshall, Monty Scott who might not have been the best athletes but could actually shoot the ball.

I think OSU was lucky they ran into a team willing to let Koufos set up down low too often, sometimes with no one on him. That had a bit to do with his "luck" as a shooter.

This was the 4th game in a row he's played like this. His last basket was pure garbage, and should've been a layup for Butler (goaltend). He had at least one or two where Dayton decided to ignore the 7 footer standing under the basket.

Day - 9-11 21 pts 5 reb
Cal - 8-10 17 pts 6 reb
Unc - 7-12 15 pts 4 reb
Msu - 8-13 19 pts 4 reb

As I said in an earlier post, well done to Dayton and good luck, but this was not a signal victory. Cal and Dayton were ranked #60 and #70 respectively in the Pomeroy ratings 2008 Pomeroy Ratings. After beating both of them, I think we fell one place to #28.

Even if you don't like computer ratings, there's a WHOLE lot of difference between the neighborhood where Ohio State is sitting (USC, UConn, Indiana, Drake, Gonzaga) and the one where Dayton is situated (Alabama, UAB, Houston, Kent St, Utah).

And Ohio State is clearly playing its best basketball of the year.

So, Tlangs, with all due respect man, your guys did well to keep it that close in the VCA. There is no reason to try to defend their honor. I think we all respect their effort.

[begin rant]

I wasn't complaining about Koufus and Diebler. Just stating that they played great games. You are taking everything I say the wrong way. I am a huge Dayton fan and a Huge OSU fan. Koufus and Diebler played great games....I was just pointing that out. Both Koufus and Diebler have strugled at times this season, they didn't last night. Heck, Koufus got benched in the overtime game against Purdue. Both Koufus and Diebler have had me throwing various items at my television at various times throughout the year. This is great news for OSU as they head to MSG ... guys that have struggled in the past seem to be coming around. I am excited for next week.

I never said they played the best defensive game of the year. I said they played as great a defense as they have all season in the second half. THAT IS A COMPLIMENT TO OSU. I have watched every OSU game this year and the defense they played in the second half matched the intensity of only a handfull of games this year (at tennesee, for stretches against NC, The last 10 minutes of the first and first 10 of the second half against Cal, MSU, and Purdue at home to name a few).

In my opinion, the defensive effort OSU put forth in the second half yesterday was by no means "typical" of this OSU team. Feel free to debate me if you disagree but I am by no means complaining. If they played defense like that all year. They would have won 4 or 5 more games and been a 4 or 5 seed in the tourney....which is what I wanted for this team in the worst possible way. I have followed OSU to the first and second rounds of the last two tourneys and lived and died with every possesion. When they lost to Georgetown at UD arena (and Archie Griffin parked next to me by the way) ....when they made that miraculous shot to force overtime against X at Rupp Arena. I love OSU basketball...I just had to root for the little guy last night and as a UD season ticket holder it has sucked to not make any post season tourney for the last few years. A trip to New York would have been great for a guy like Roberts who had never played in a post season game until this year.

I took off work for the first round of the Big 10 tourney and when they lost it flat out ruined my weekend knowing that OSU wouldn't get in the big dance....ask my wife....I was on suicide watch. Within 48 UD lost to archrival Xavier for the 6th time in a row, Ohio University lost to its archrival Miami for the second time in a row, and OSU's NCAA hopes were dashed by a school from Michigan. Some people say I am crazy for following all these basketball teams. I have different reasons for liking each time. The three teams I follow rarely/never play eachother and yesterday was a lot of fun.

[/end rant]

maybe dayton wasnt an "average" opponent?

maybe 16 TOs were a bad thing

maybe their were some bad calls that dayton got shorted on. id also say a couple went the other way, maybe their were a couple 2-3 balls that were goaltended by dayton.

maybe the people scheduling are smarter than we think for ohio state. ohio state is the state school many teams have ohio state as a favorite and pledge an allegiance to another school (ou, miami, kent, ud, toledo, etc). if they played these games regularly you have to wonder if a divide would be driven through the state...

Beyond all that, my intended point was just that OSU played one of their better games of the season last night, but the same can't be said for UD.

And for whatever it's worth, what I'm really arguing against was some of the animosity I read towards tlangs for expressing a similar sentiment. Seemed unjustified, IMO.

He has shot poorly from 3 in some big games that cost us some W's
UNC 2-10
@ Tennesse 1-7
@ Indiana 2-8
Indiana 0-5
Wisky 2-8
@Michigan 2-9,
@ Iowa 1-7

Not to mention the 1-7 performance in the title game last year...so this wasn't unprecedented.
