NIT: #1 Ohio State 73, #4 Cal 56 (at St. John)

You guys go from playing the biggest player in NCAA basketball to perhaps the smallest in Jerome Randle. Patrick Christopher really impressed me in the one game I got to see in person, but he's from Compton so perhaps he was extra motivated to beat SC. Anderson is just a steady guy who will get his points, often very quietly. Hardin has been struggling lately from what I've seen, getting in foul trouble early or otherwise being injured.

Should be a good game.

it certainly isn't an effect of RBGH...

anyway, this is the time of year I wish I had spent more time watching other team's play, so I knew something about them when it was important...

I haven't seen any write ups for the match up yet, maybe it's still to early.

I think it would be interesting to see an all guard set or something against these guys, especially if they are little..

Sure wish I knew more about their team =-\...

Time to go research.

Do a Google on UC-Berkeley California basketball or something. METHUMPS gave a pretty good synopsis in one of the above posts.

I do not think that they have a small all-around starting lineup just their PG. Ohio State will not go with four guards this late in the season no matter who they play.

That may be smart, but I still enjoy watching it

Buckeyes, Bears, Braun not exactly total strangers
TONIGHT ? NIT: California vs. Ohio
State, 7 p.m. TV: ESPN

BLADE SPORTS WRITER

COLUMBUS - Ohio State and California do not get together on the basketball court very often. Their first meeting in almost 50 years takes place tonight in the appropriately historic setting of St. John Arena. The second round game in the National Invitation Tournament was moved to the grand old barn on the OSU campus since a Bruce Springsteen concert had previously been set for tonight at the Buckeyes' new basketball home, Value City Arena. When Ohio State last played Cal, and defeated the Bears 75-55 in the 1960 NCAA national championship game in San Francisco, Fred Taylor was the Buckeyes' coach, and Jerry Lucas the tournament's most outstanding player. The Buckeyes of that era were dominant in St. John Arena, and the building's enduring charm is not lost on Cal coach Ben Braun, a Midwest native. "I've been to St. John Arena," said Braun, who grew up in Chicago and coached at Eastern Michigan before taking the Cal job 12 seasons ago. "We've watched high school tournaments there. It's a great place - there's a lot of tradition there." Braun, a three-time Mid-American Conference coach of the year during his 11 seasons at Eastern Michigan, got his Cal Bears (17-15) here by defeating New Mexico 68-66 on Wednesday at home in Berkeley in the first round of the NIT.

OSU men's basketball
St. John ready to rumble all over again
Fans, band and a lively rivalry could really rock old arena

Kosta Koufos and the Buckeyes take on Cal at St. John Arena.

Oh, the stories the walls of St. John Arena could tell. The ones still able to speak, that is.
Alan Major, an assistant coach for the Ohio State men's basketball team, was a student manager at Purdue in 1992 when the Boilermakers came in to play the No. 8-ranked Buckeyes.
"(Ohio State) went on a run, we had to call time out, the band was right by the baseline and started blaring Hang On Sloopy. I remember it being one of the loudest sounds I ever heard in my life," Major said.
Another loud sound came in the locker room after Purdue lost 71-59.
"Coach (Gene) Keady was upset and gave it to (the players)," Major said. "Then he turned and threw a haymaker at the chalkboard and actually put a dent in it."
That might be the same locker room California occupies tonight when Ohio State goes retro for the second round of the National Invitation Tournament. The game will be played in 52-year-old St. John while the Buckeyes' current home, 10-year-old Value City Arena, plays host to a concert by Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band.
