A pair of coaching stalwarts hung up their clipboards on Wednesday, with Alabama coach Nick Saban and Seahawks coach Pete Carroll both calling it quits on their coaching career after 50 years on the sidelines each.
Saban and Carroll are tactical icons, having basked in the spotlight at both the collegiate and professional levels. Both instructors have trophy cabinets lined with gold and silver, having combined to pick up 10 championships between them (seven national championships from Saban, two national titles — one of which was vacated — and a Super Bowl title from Carroll).
Still, in addition to being two of the greatest football minds of their generation, the 72-year olds are inextricably connected to one another. For not only did they lead they become elite head coaches, but they also swapped jobs in when neither was famous — Saban replaced Carroll as defensive backs coach at Ohio State in 1980.
Saban and Carroll's contributions to the collegiate game will never be forgotten. But their tenures in Buckeyes red may have slipped under the radar slightly, at least in comparison to the swell of success they achieved in Tuscaloosa, Seattle and Pasadena, respectively.

There's no way you go with Kiffin, right? His shenanigans are allowed in Oxford, where they're just happy to have a successful coach, but his lack of professionalism won't fly in Tuscaloosa.

Nick Saban's abrupt retirement could have a ripple effect on Ohio State and the rest of college football with Alabama players receiving a new 30-day transfer window.

ALABAMA PLAYERS NOW HAVE A 30-DAY WINDOW TO ENTER THE TRANSFER PORTAL
In the interim, regardless of how soon a replacement is named, or who the next Crimson Tide coach is, all players in the Alabama program now have a 30-day window to enter the transfer portal to find new homes if they so choose because of the NCAA rules regarding a coaching change.The only exceptions to that are four Alabama signees from the 2024 class, running back Kevin Riley, wide receiver Amari Jefferson, wide receiver Rico Scott and tight end Jay Lindsey. They’d need the school to let them out of their National Letter of Intent if they want to play elsewhere because they’re not officially enrolled in the university. Alabama’s other 21 early enrollees from the 2024 class all should be fair game for transfer purposes if they so choose, even though they’ve been on campus for less than a week.
Hell, it only took two hours after Saban’s retirement was announced for the floodgates to start cracking open after five-star 2024 wide receiver Ryan Williams decommitted from Alabama. In fairness, that divorce is a lot easier to facilitate since Williams hadn’t signed with the Crimson Tide and won’t sign with any school until Feb. 7.
Since the winter transfer portal opened, Ohio State has already added one transfer from Alabama to its roster for the 2024 season in center Seth McLaughlin. Considering Alabama boasts one of the more talented rosters in the entire sport, OSU (and let’s be honest, a million other teams) would likely consider adding others should they become available.
There has been no shortage of recruiting battles Ohio State has lost to Alabama over the years. Some players who chose to play for the Crimson Tide instead of the Buckeyes currently on Alabama’s roster include:
- Safety Caleb Downs
- Offensive tackle Kadyn Proctor
- Offensive tackle Olaus Alinen
- Running back Justice Haynes
- Running back Richard Young
- Linebacker Jihaad Campbell
- Defensive end Keon Keeley
- Offensive lineman Tyler Booker
- Quarterback Julian Sayin
- Safety Peyton Woodyard
- Cornerback Zabien Brown
- Five-star wideout Jaime Ffrench
- Four-star defensive end Javion Hilson
- Four-star offensive tackle Mason Short
Some of those names mentioned would make more sense for the Buckeyes than others. For example, I can tell you right now, if Caleb Downs entered the portal Ohio State would have massive interest in bringing in the 2023 five-star prospect. But with OSU’s entire starting cornerback room running it back for 2024 and the highly touted prospects the Buckeyes are bringing in, it would not make as much sense to bring in someone like Zabien Brown.
Should Alabama players opt to explore their options in the next month, the ripple effects for the Crimson Tide and the rest of the country could be massive.

Just sayin': Ryans is in his 1st year of a 6 contract with the Texans. Last year the texans went 3-13-1. He got them into the playoffs in his 1st year. He's got a franchise QB in CJ Stroud. His future sure looks bright in Houston. Why would he want to leave for Alabama and have to deal with recruiting, NIL, and the transfer portal?

"I have been around the game of football my entire life and I've always had a natural ability to lead others. I know what it takes to win and be successful in this league as both a player and coach.

According to a report from KVAL CBS in Eugene, Ore., the next head coach could already be in Tuscaloosa."As we did report before, I do, I previously worked in Alabama - in Tuscaloosa. Of course, I do have some sources there," said anchor Brandon Kamerman. "We did confirm that Lanning is in Tuscaloosa - in Alabama. It doesn't mean the job is signed - the contract is signed, but he's there and what I was told is that the players were told a decision will be made in the next 72 hours"
