Nick Saban (ex-HC Alabama Crimson Tide)

Nick Saban before 17th season at Alabama: 'I don't really think about retiring'

Nick Saban addresses retirement questions every offseason, and this one is no different. The 70-year-old gave a clear answer about it during an appearance on The Dan Patrick Show.

"I don't really think about retiring," Saban told Patrick. "I always think about, 'What the heck am I going to do if I do retire?' And that's a scary thought."

Patrick, 66, says he is asked all the time how much longer he will host his show. He said he has no clue what he would do after he decided to walk away.

"That's exactly how I feel," Saban said when Patrick described his own situation. "I don't know if that's hard for people to understand. There's nothing that I want to do — like, some people want to go to Europe or Scotland and play golf and all that. Like, I don't — I wouldn't mind doing all that stuff, but I don't have to quit my job to do it. I worry about, 'What am I going to do if I don't do this?' And when I say, 'What am I going to do?' I don't mean play golf or whatever. I mean, how are you going to get any kind of positive self gratification, the feeling of accomplishment, when you've done something for so long that you like so much and then all of a sudden that's not there? So it's a good question. I don't really have the answer to that one."

Stoops decided to retire in 2016, saying that it was the ideal time for him to step down and transition the program to Riley. He said that his health was not a factor in his decision to retire. "I feel the timing is perfect to hand over the reins. The program is in tremendous shape.

Bob Stoops is 56 & has won 10 Big12 titles. I'm told his reasoning for stepping down now is because he's ready & he wants to "go live life." This isn't the first time a head coach has suddenly decided to retire in order to spend time with family and just live life.

Just sayin': Very few football coaches do what Bob Stoops did, retire at a relatively young age while they are still "on top".

And every program in America would sell their soul to get him!

Most would, certainly

Would Gene? I seriously doubt it.

If your choice is between 70 year old Nick Saban and 43 year old Ryan Day, who do you take? To me, that’s a question that’s so easy I’m not sure why I bothered typing it

More interesting to me have been the posts by at least two of our members that compare the résumés of Saban and Day at the same age.

Who do you take: 43 year old Saban or 43 year old Day (if you didn’t know that Saban would be an all time great)?

Hopefully Ryan won’t have to fail in the NFL before he goes on a crazy dynastic run of championships

I just wonder how many more years Saban has left in him. His level of success isn't falling off anytime soon, but I wonder if the longer he's at Bama, the further he puts them in the hole when he retires. Say he stays another 5yrs, I'm not sure who's out there that would be willing to follow in his foot steps, when in 5years, I see Bama still being in their dynasty mode. The coach that follows him will have talent to hold them over for another year or 2, but IDK how you keep the insane amount of talent flowing

Ex-Alabama football RB Najee Harris reveals rocky relationship with Nick Saban early in college career

“Me and Saban, I’m going to be honest with you guys, me and Saban man, we did not get along at first,” Harris said. “We had a couple arguments at first. Because he just didn’t understand the type of dude I was. I don’t know how many Cali dudes he had… but I’m not the type of dude to just sit back and just like let somebody just like talk to me I guess in a way and then not expect me to say something. I can take coaching but like, it’s just a certain type of line when you cross, it’s like alright bro, I’m a man. You ain’t gonna (expletive) talk to me like that. So I guess that he wasn’t used to having somebody talk back to him in a way… I was like, man look it — coach me, man. You can coach me. But don’t think you more than just a coach to me. Don’t try to belittle me. I feel like I was belittled… We just bumped heads a lot.”

It all came to a head during Harris’ senior season after he made the decision not to leave early for the NFL Draft.

“It was the COVID year and I came back from school, it was our last incident,” Harris said. “Imagine, all four years we kind of bumped heads. But in a good way, you know. Then like the COVID year, last incident happened and I left school. I was like, ‘Man, I ain’t messing with y’all. I’m gone.’ So I left school for like two weeks. People didn’t know that. I left school for like two weeks. Then Saban sat me in his office and we exchanged words. From that point on, he took his time out the day really to understand who I am, you know what I mean? And ever since that day, we were rock solid, man. Other people gonna lie about relationships like, ‘Oh yeah we clicked right on.’ It was not like that with me and Coach Saban.”

Nick Saban contract extension: Alabama coach regains highest-paid spot with deal worth $93.6 million

Saban's new contract moves him past Georgia's Kirby Smart for the top salary for a college football coach

Alabama coach Nick Saban has regained his spot as the highest-paid coach in college football after the University of Alabama Board of Trustees' compensation committee approved a one-year contract extension. The new terms push Saban's contract out through the 2029 season and pays him more than $90 million over the next eight years.

The contract increases his base compensation to $305,000 over each year of the contract. However, the main part of his contract involves the "talent fee," which starts at $9,595,000 during the 2022 season and will increase to $12,395,000 at the end of the contract, when Saban is 79. Additionally, Saban will receive an $800,000 contract completion benefit each year between 2022 and 2025.

Well, I guess the best collage football coach should be the highest paid.
