Everything Nick Saban said after Alabama's 10th spring practice
Alabama coach Nick Saban spoke to reporters via Zoom on Wednesday following the 10th practice of the spring. Below is everything Saban said during his virtual media availability.
"We got 10 practices in now. One of the things that we want to see is individual players improve, improve their ability to play winning football fundamentals. But I also think we're trying to develop some team dynamics, some team chemistry, looking for people who put team first. Guys that understand that what you did last year really is not going to create any value for what you do this year, or help you play better this year, but it's going to be based on what you do to create positive outcomes for yourself this year by paying attention to detail, doing little things right, playing with discipline, holding each other accountable to the standards that they all know that we expect from them day in and day out, being positive, not being negative, set a good example for each other and they have great examples on this team of some of the things that we had on last year's team, which was all about intangibles, it was all about leadership, it was all about holding people accountable. So I think that's part of the development that we want to have in spring practice as a team, as well as just running plays improving learning assignments, learning what to do, how to do it, why it's important to do it that way. And I do see improvement.
"The last two practices, I think you see a lot of young guys who were very apprehensive and unsure, uncertain about what they were supposed to do so they didn't play fast in the last scrimmage. I see those guys starting to get a little more confidence, and I think they've learned a lot from the first time in the stadium, first time in the scrimmage, first time being in a live situation in college football for a lot of them so you look for great improvement from the first scrimmage to the second scrimmage. And certainly that's going to be our goal for this one. One of the things that does cause a little bit of confusion this time in the spring is it's almost like we have double install. We're still gonna put in some things, the offense is putting more and more things, we have to play against more and more things on both sides of the ball, but at the same time, we spend time working on opponents and things that we don't see from our offense so we're putting a plan in for that too so it can be a little bit of a burden for especially some of the younger players, it's a lot for them to absorb each and every practice but at least we're getting exposure to it. So when we have to play against that next year it's not going to be all new for them.
"So we're looking forward to a much better scrimmage. We'll have kind of a -- Friday's practice will be sort of polished, not put a lot of stuff in, try to get guys to understand what we're going to do so that they can go out there and play fast and we can make some improvement as a team."
ON PLAYERS WAITING THEIR TURNS SETTING EXAMPLES...
"I don't really talk to players that much about trusting the process. I talk to players about the importance of focusing on development. You might see that as a similar thing, or maybe even the same. But I think everybody needs to have the ability to self-assess, to figure out, 'OK, here's where I'm at.' That's the only way you can improve if you can self-assess. And then you kind of help the coaches help you to find what you need to do to actually improve so that you can become a better player. We want everybody to play early. That's our goal. We've played a lot of freshmen here. We've had a lot of freshmen start for us and play very well. But at the same time, we have a responsibility and obligation not to put a guy out there when he's not ready to go play with confidence, be confident in what he's doing so he can go play fast and create value for himself. So we want players to focus on development, not outcomes. Outcomes can be distractions, so we want them to focus on what they need to do to get the outcome, and their ability to self-assess helps their learning curve, I think."
