Nice Northeastern Small Town/Lake Getaways?

Getting ready for a week away with the lady and she wants to stay at some lakeside/beachside cottage somewhere in the northeast. Maine is a tad too far but Ohio and Pennsylvania are off limits. Any suggestions from any well-traveled planeteers?

Some things we're going for...small town or village, somewhat inexpensive, waterside (lake), w/beach (preferibly), w/in 10 hours driving distance. If anyone can come up with any ideas that might be helpful, I'd greatly appreciate it!

Vermont/Upstate NY/NH'ish?

We do both have passports and so far I've been checking out some of these suggestions...very enticing ideas so far. I've heard Montauk is out of this world...Maine sounds great too...cities?

Maine is the bomb. Lived there for three years and would go back to live if I could. Any small coast town north of Portland is like a picture. Vinal Haven, Cape Elizabeth, two light state park, Cadilac Mountain. Too many to mention. Quiet, not many people.

BTW Portland is a hidden gem. Great resturants, art. Still a very small city. Much like Seattle 20 years ago.

Portland is great. Many of my coworkers go to Old Orchard Beach and Cape Elizabeth. I loved the Wiscasset/Boothbay Harbor area as well. One of the best lobster rolls ever is at Red's Eats in Wiscasset.

+1. Been to both LP maybe 10 times and also Lake George. I like LG much better between the two. Not that much to do in LP in the summer. But if it is not that big a deal, go up east to Mass or Maine.

Try looking into Lake Winnepesauke (sp)
New Hampshire I think. Ive never been there, but my cousin raves about it.

I have done VT.. around Smugglers Notch and Mt Mansfield... very pretty...

but IMO the time to do VT and Maine is September... stunning...

This is a great Maine suggestion by Sushi! I second this! But, the best places won't be cheap.

Or somewhere around Lake Champlain. In Vermont.

Unless you go all the way to Maine, prices may be daunting,

The Finger Lakes region(New York) will be a bit cheaper over all.
