I know I'm late to the party, but this is an incredible return for Calgary... if they sign Huberdeau and Weegar. I know Hubderdeau's agent has already discussed an extension with them.

That being said, I think Calgary is expecting a rebuild in no more than three years. They just signed Mangiapane to a weird contract. It'll take him right into FA. They paid him like they were buying UFA years... without buying UFA years. Very strange. Same situation with dman Kylington. Both good players, both were just RFAs, still young. Mangiapane got a 3 year contract and Kylington got a 2 year contract. The deadline will tell us what Calgary wants to do with its future. (they need to blow it up, they just lost the two players good enough to build around)

Kadri is apparently signing with the Islanders, but the Islanders need to move cap. Apparently Josh Bailey is the cap casualty. Hopefully future considerations is warming up, because Bjorkstrand is both younger and better and he didn't get shit.
Mangiapane looks like a nutria.

Huberdeau extends for 8/84. That's great for optics given how dire things looked a few weeks ago and they should get a few good years out of him. He will be 30 when that extension kicks in, which takes him to age 38, so that contract probably won't age well. They're trying to keep a window open though, so fuck it. If they can get Weegar to re-up, good chance they "win" that trade.

Little behind, but Kadri signs with CGY, 7/7 deal. While that contract is gonna age like milk, he will make them better for at least the next year or two. CGY has bounced back from what appeared to be an absolute disaster of an off-season, to probably break even, maybe even improve slightly on last year. Huberdeau signs long term, they add a pest second line C in Kadri and improve their D corp with Weeger.

Meanwhile, the Islanders are just total sad sacks. They fire the best coach they've had since Al Arbour after one "meh" year, are heavily linked to Gaudreau and watch him sign with CBJ, then spend weeks as the presumptive landing spot for Kadri only to watch him sign with CGY out of nowhere. They've done nothing to improve and downgraded behind the bench. Oofta.

Agreed. Calgary had to sign those guys. I'm just surprised they didn't sign Mangiapane and Kylington longer now, I guess.

I heard they were shopping Barzal to make room for Kadri, lol. It's probably bullshit, but it's definitely the Islanders.

One of the more pathetic stories I've read about hockey.

The Coyotes are playing in a college arena with a capacity just over 5k. They have generated 50% more revenue in season ticket packages than in the history of their previous arena.

Im honestly shocked the commish didn’t step in and move them out of AZ. Then again, they’ve had their hands full with expansion of LV and Seattle.

Unrelated, but I find it wild that Wisconsin doesn’t have an NHL team. Just seems like it’d be such a good market.

I have a soft spot for the 'yotes. I was a big Keith Tkachuk fan in the 90s so I always played as the Coyotes on the PlayStation NHL games. Plus when I was stationed in SoCal back in '97-'98. One of my best friends out there was from PHX, so I actually went to 3 'yotes games, 2 their first year down there & 1 the second...that place was packed & electric. I didn't pay much attention to them after they dealt Tkachuk, but when they went back to the Kachina jerseys last year, they got a nostalgia bump from me and I now have both their home & away Kachina jerseys in my collection. Most people find them hideous, but I love them.

So, watching the Coyotes/Jets in the 'Yotes home opener at their college arena. Firstly, it doesn't feel like you're watching an NHL game...at all. The puck takes weird bounces off the boards, in one instance, a Coyotes player dumped it down into the Jets zone and when it hit the corner it careened all the way back towards their net. Fortunately for the Jets, their goalie stayed in the crease, but if he had come out to play the puck, it very well could've bounced past him right in front of their net. Secondly, it looks like it would be a ton of fun to take in an NHL game there. Looks like it would have a very intimate feel as everything looks so close to the ice. Lastly, for broadcast purposes, it's pretty cool. The cameras are close to the ice, so everything feels like you're right there. All that said, I can't imagine the players are going to like it much at all after the novelty wears off. Small crowds and an amateurish arena lacking the amenities of an NHL arena would suck having to deal with for 41 games.

The away team’s locker room is pipes and curtains. lol

The arena would be a cool novelty, but it’s a failure of unacceptable proportions to have to use a 5k arena for an entire season.

Imagine how much money the franchise would lose if they made the playoffs. Obviously that’s a longshot, but man.

I don’t have an issue with the Coyotes. But it’s time to move them. The experiment failed. They’re making more money in a college arena!!

I hate to see any relocations, but the Coyotes really need to get out of Arizona, this joke has gone on long enough, the NHL has done everything they can to try and make Arizona a successful market...it just hasn't worked.
