NFL Discussion (Official Thread)

LA is gonna have to pay the piper for giving up all those picks around the same time Stafford EDIT: leaves in FA. It looks like the LA window is two more years and then they will be rebuilding.

Trading 1st round draft picks is what they have been doing:

The Rams have a unique strategy. After completing this trade, they will now go seven consecutive draft classes without owning a first-round pick. Of course, they can trade for one at a later date, but that seems unlikely. The current Rams regime believes in their ability to locate talent on the second and third days of the draft and so they're willing to make big moves to acquire already developed NFL stars (Jalen Ramsey, Stafford, etc.) using their first-round picks as leverage. However, with their total salary cap number rising, long-term salary cap allocated to stars like Ramsey, Stafford, Aaron Donald and others, and their offensive line aging -- they aren't leaving much margin for error. Trading draft picks also makes it harder to field a deep roster and compete in seasons where the injury luck is not on your side.

It's bonkers to trade away seven consecutive first round picks. Young, affordable talent is the core of building a team in a salary cap league. You'd be hard-pressed to find a front office acting more desperate. It's almost as if the Rams think "Draft Day" is real life and they can trade later round picks to get all their 1sts back.

The Red Wings did that in the 90s and into the 2000s for a bit. While they won cups eventually the lineup got old and they've been the worst team in the NHL for 3 years now. Football has a far higher turnaround rate than hockey does, so LA's already on borrowed time.

Just sayin': Back in the 70s the Washington Redskins coached by George Allen did that too. The team was referred to aa the "over the hill gang".

The Over the Hill Gang

In 1971, their new head coach George Allen told his players after losing their first playoff game in years that the next year, they would be a championship team. Allen did not lie. In 1972, Washington managed to win the NFC Championship. Allen is most known for trading away draft picks in order to obtain older and more experienced players from around the league.

2018 Rams—The New Over-the-Hill Gang?

In 1971, and also for several following seasons, George Allen, the Washington Redskins coach brought in older players through trading away his draft picks. He declared "The Future is Now".

Allen brought in Billy Kilmer, Verlon Biggs, Ron McDole, Myron Pottios, Maxie Baughan, Jack Pardee, Ritchie Petitbon among others. All were older, established players. Allen also brought in some younger established players like John Wilbur (28) and Diron Talbert (27) again, among others.

McVey finally gets a QB with arm strength. There were times you could visibly see how much Goff hampered the offense and frustrated McVey on the sideline. Amazing he was able to design enough plays for the noodle arm to succeed and get to a SB.

With an assist from one of the worst no calls in playoff history. Still can't believe there was no flag.

Schefter has reported Stafford is being dealt to the Rams for Goff, two firsts and a 3rd.

Big trade for the Lions, gives them needed assets to rebuild. They were going nowhere even with Stafford. But they are taking a big step back at QB with this move. They were already a trash team even with good QB play, so clearly they are gonna take a few years to rebuild. The Rams obviously are in win-now mode.

Speculation is the Raiders are interested in swapping Carr for Watson. That would be a very odd move for the Raiders. I don't know that Watson would make them contenders or anything like that. Carr has been playing well enough to stick with him at QB and not sacrifice other assets to upgrade.

There's a huge portion of the fanbase that hates Carr for no understandable reason. He's very good. He's not Aaron Rodgers or Mahomes or anything.....but he's a really good QB, being wasted on a team that would improve if given a bad defense.

Yeah, having no pass rush is the main problem I would be addressing if I were the Raiders GM. Hard to rationalize giving up assets to acquire Watson considering QB isn't remotely your biggest need. Maybe this is just a smokescreen, who knows.

I think having Gruden as coach is pretty easy to just make shit up and people will believe it's something Gruden would do.

Obviously the Texans are in a bad spot right now. A rebuilding job, crippled by bad BOB trades, and their star player publicly wanting out even though trading him is the last thing they want to do. Now they are in panic mode, seemingly unable to trade a star without getting back a king's ransom. I sense a lot of desperation coming out of Houston. They are probably leaking trade possibilities to try and fan the flames of interest and drive up the price as much as possible.

stafford was basically a 1st & 3rd + an Ok QB on a bad deal (which needed the Lions another 1st).

So basically the floor is 1st & 3rd ... if you’re a team after him... why offer anything more than 1st + some 2nds and 3rds or more later picks... Watson isn’t playing another down for Houston....wait it out.

Yeah. Watson basically cut Houston's legs out from under them saying he'd be willing to sit out the 2021 season. They're not going to get what they're hoping for. And it's their own fault.
