NFL VP says officials didn't err with whistle on Bengals touchdown vs. Raiders

The Raiders appeared to have been thrown off by an inadvertent whistle blown during a key first-half play that resulted in a touchdown for the Bengals.

Las Vegas defenders were chasing Cincinnati quarterback Joe Burrow toward the sideline, and Burrow was close to stepping out of bounds as he threw the ball. An official near the play blew his whistle, thinking Burrow had gone out. The pass was caught by Tyler Boyd in the end zone. Officials met after the play and allowed the touchdown to stand.

The Raiders' defense, though, appeared to slow up after the whistle was blown. It assumed the play was dead at that point.

After the game, NFL senior vice president of officiating Walt Anderson told Pro Football Writers' Association pool reporter Paul Dehner that the officials on the field determined that the whistle was blown after Boyd caught the ball, and that the call on the field was a touchdown.

Anderson added that the officials reviewed that Burrow was in bounds when he threw the pass and noted that whether the whistle was erroneous was not reviewable.

All the talk about "the defender stopped when the whistle was blown" is kinda crap. The whistle was blown, at best, a half second before the ball was caught, a good 1-2 yards between the defenders. The defender stopped because he was beat, and had no play on the ball.
So.....that's not true at all. When NBC showed the replay, they delayed the whistle. In real time, the whistle blows as he lets go of the ball.

It doesn't matter to me, because the better team won. But it's dangerous that they did this and are getting away with it. I heard the whistle live and wondered why none of the announcers even mentioned it.....and to me, it's pretty clear that the defenders stopped playing because of it.

Again, this isn't a gripe about a win being stolen. It wasn't. They would've/should've won either way. It's just insane that a broadcast team is covering up for bad reffing.

That was pretty horrible and they were bad all day.

I think Bengals would have won anyway but the Raiders got fucked on that call. It's a side effect of the protection given to QB's imo. They get near the end of a play and everyone lets up. Every now and then when the QB can play to the last second and no one else can, this kind of shit is going to happen.

The roughing the passer on Carr in the last drive was worse, because it gave the Raiders extra yardage on top of a big play. This call would've just resulted in a do over.......which ultimately fucks the Bengals, because it's possible they score on that play without the whistle. So result-of-the-play-wise, it wasn't even the worst call of the game. But the fact that NBC messed with the audio to trick people into thinking the refs didn't fuck up should be the story here.

I don’t know why I am even watching this TB game.

They are going to ape rape the birds, Brady is going to get some calls because he’s Brady and I’m just going to be pissed off.

Im a glutton for self abuse I guess.

It's cool watching NFL DC's scheme up ways to attack the running game when the QB element is involved with reads and such.

You create almost a 5-2 look, send a small(er) body off the edge and as a result you've got a guy who can be physical inside, but quick enough to recover back outside.
Sort of muddles the read for Hurts and he ends up eating a TFL on 3rd down.
