NFC Championship Game: Vikings at Saints(-4.5)

For 1 year, he is still a top 6 or 7 QB. If he wants to come backanother year, Minnesota would be crazy not to take him. It's the old age vs. longevity argument. For next year I'd take Favre ahead of almost any QB in the league outisde of Manning, Brady, Brees, and maybe Rivers......but he has little time left.

I'll tell you what, his pocket awareness tonight was pretty amazing. He faced pressure all night long and took 1 sack I think. Just an incredible feat for someone 40+. It's unfortunate all people will remeber is that last turnover......when he had an All-Pro type season. He carried Minnesota for almost the entire year and proved he's still a top-tier QB.

Not a first down on the 4th and 1 run. Once Pierre Thomas loses control of that ball, forward progress is irrelevant. It's where that ball is regained which was clearly behind the first down marker. I understand the hesitation to not overturn that call, but it was bad nonetheless.

First, Thomas did not "lose control" of the ball...it never left his possession so it was never "regained". Second, the ball was clearly at/past the first-down marker when Greenway's helmet hit it and pushed it backwards in Thomas' hands. Nowhere near being a "bad" call.

I just assumed that it was inconclusive as to exactly where the forward progress was, and was not "correct" so much as not ascertainable/inconclusive, and therefore the call stood.

Just b/c theball didn't leave his body, doesn't mean he maintained possesion. Th eball was losse in his arms, and he clearly lost possesion of the football. He regained it in his arms, but only after the ball had been moved back half a yard....I'm not sure how it could be seen any differently. He 100% lost control of the ball. He 100% regained it but behind the first down marker.

I agree. The evidence wasn't going to be enough to overturn the call, especially when angles are so difficult to place where the ball is in conjunction with yard lines. But it was obvious he lost control of the football in his arms, and regained the ball much further back than where they gave hom forwatd progress. I'm sure video will surface soon. He 100% lost control of the ball though, only to regain it fairly quickly before it was popped loose out of his body.

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bu95sjuTd00]YouTube - Pierre Thomas Huge Air Against Vikings NFC Playoffs 2010[/ame]

There is a better angle out there, but the ball was popped backwards. While Pierre Thomas did regain control of the ball, the ball should be spotted where he regained control, not where he initially reached the ball too. It'd be hard to overturn b/c its nearly impossible to determine where the ball should actually be placed...if I had to guess, I'd say it wasn't a first down. Kind of reminds me of Stafon Johnson scoring an illegitimate touchdown aganst the Buckeyes when his knee was clearly down, but initial perception is correct call so it goes unnoticed.

Wrong. If he "100% lost control of the ball", it would've been completely out of his hands, which it wasn't.

No, not at all. So a receiver that attempts to catch a ball, but juggles it, has complete control of the ball if he comes down with it?? Pierre jumps over the pile, gets hit with a helmet, loses control of the ball, the ball moves to his midsection where he regainsc ontrol, and then gets taken to the ground. That is where the ball should have been spotted.

It's similar to the Kevein Faulk catch against Indianapolis that resulted in a loss of downs. He caught the ball, but wasn't given forward progress b/c he didn't have control of the ball. Thomas jumps over the pile, but loses control of the ball momentarily, and regains control of it....but it doesn't look like the spot is correct. They gave him the spot where he initially reached, not the spot where the ball ended up after he lost control of the ball briefly.

The ball was popped loose, but he was able to use his left arm to pin the ball to his body and maintain enough control to leep it from being removed from his body. He still lost control of the ball though. The ball should have been spotted where he regained control of it....which was a half yard back from where they initially spotted it.

While all this is true, he'll still break your heart with a moronic throw when it really counts. See late last season with the Jets and see the overtime game vs. the NYG two years ago. It's in his DNA.

Anyway, see ya at the retirement presser in a couple weeks Brett...then again this summer at the un-retirement presser.

I feel a little for the refs in this game - some of those calls are legitimately tough ones.

However, I lose sympathy when I realize that they throw some of these flags that COMPLETELY alter the game in favor of one team. A very questionable PI call in OVERTIME? Come on, ref, keep that flag in the pocket - let them play. I don't understand what they can be thinking - in a game as important as this, it's time to forget the ticky tacky calls.

Once again, I don't mind the spotting that they did - these are very hard to make, and honestly it could go either way. But I swear, if I see this kind of shit in the Superbowl [a phantom PI in the 4th quarter, an excessive celebration penalty on a go-ahead TD or some shit like that], there better be some heads rolling.
