Next Year's (2007) QB Situation?

Bob Saccamano

These pretzels are making me thirsty.
With Smith and Zwick graduating, what is our QB depth chart going to look like? The only other QB I really know right now is Boeckman. Is he good enough and ready to start? The other QBs on the roster are Ciepiela, Kacsandi, and Schoenhoft.

I haven't really been paying to much attention to recruiting, but I don't think we are bringing in a top notch QB that will be ready to start right away.

Help me out fellow Buckeyes! What will be the QB depth chart for the '07 season?

My guess is Boeckman will get the first look. Schoenhoft is probably in line for a good look as well. But, I'm hopeful Antonio Henton steps in and picks up where Smith leaves off.

However, it's WAY too early for me to suggest Henton should get the ball as a rFr in 07. We'll let him get on campus first.

QB Sitch

It's looking like Boeckman or Schoencroft for next year. In the spring game, Showshow had a good arm, made some pretty good decisions. He's slower than either Boeckman or Smith, but isn't afraid to run the ball despite not being elusive.

Boeckman on one hand looked really sharp in the spring game. He made some great passes and decisions and showed good mobility. He's not a running qb, but has some quicks. In the spring game, he didn't really have a lot of protection and felt pressure all day and got punished a few times. But he got up and kept playing. In the second half, I'm not sure if it was desperation, he started forcing throws and making some bad decisions.

Boeckman has more time in the system and looks generally more seasoned.

Antonio Henton is coming in the fall. He's a Troy Smith protege. It's a realistic expectation that he'll redshirt and play for two years after either Rob or Todd leave.

I guess it depends on who the Buckeyes are playing that week. I think Boeckman is "good enough" and "ready" to start against Illinois or Akron. I'd guess that he is not "good enough" or "ready" to start against Michigan or Penn State. But he has another year to worry about that. I think he will be ready.

My guess is that he and Schoenhoft will duke it out to see who starts in 07. Schoenhoft will be a red-shirt sophomore at that point, and Boeckman will be a 5th-year junior. I'd guess that it'll be Boeckman's job to lose. I'd be surprised if Tressel allows a red-shirt freshman to start over those two guys. If this Henton guy is going to play, he's going to have to wait a couple of years.

slower? Schoenhoft was extremely elusive in the pocket (despite his size), evading the frequent defenders swarming the pocket. Mobility-wise, he reminded me of a stronger Krenzel. Boeckman was caught a few times. Both showed promise and some mobility, and also were prone to some mistakes.

I also am eager to see what Henton brings to the table. He is further ahead in his progression than Troy was at this point in his career, but he will have to overcome a lot of familiarity/talent ahead of him.

All I've seen of Boeckmann is his time in the Miami game, which looked great to me.

After Smith, well..........that's a hell of an act to follow.

Lichter has been quoted as saying that he's most impressed with the quarterbacks.

This should be fun to watch.......it's really nice to have problems like this!:oh:

I hate QB battles. I really do.

That being said, I hope Schoenhoft wins the position battle because I read on his thread that when he commited to OSU, the scUM coach recruiting him called and started abusing him. He said he will be playing them soon and he'll remember that. I hope he gets the opportunity to keep his word. :oh::io:

Henton, Boeckman or Schoenhoft?

As long as there is a clear winner, I will trust they are ready to do the job.

(From my perspective a singular outcome will be better than having rotating QBs).

Absolutely. I just want one of the QBs to stand out and take the job without controversy. To that end, I could care less which of the 3 it is.

QB battles are a good thing, since they create competition which hopefully brings out the best in all contestants--it's when the battle slows to a stalemate and becomes a "controversy" that problems arise. I'm really looking forward to Todd, Robby and Antonio all bringing their best at next spring's practice--though it would be nice if there were a clear leader after the Spring Game.

Ah, so it looks like Boeckman will be the favorite going into next year.

I don't know much about Henton but it sounds like he is speedy. Anybody know much about his passing? Strength, accuracy, ect...

That'd be nice if he can form in to a Troy Smith type player, as many of you are addressing.

I agree i think Todd will get the first chance or a head start into the starting spot. Schoenhoft should be #2. Todd throws the deep ball better than anybody on the roster right not. But he is not as moblie as Smith and probably never will be. I think he is more like Krenzel with a strong arm.

Henton passed for over 1,810 yards in his junior season, while throwing for 19 TDs and only 5 INTs. He also had 316 rushing yards on 36 attempts.

In his senior season, Henton started out slow to injury but bounced back nicely. He helped his team to the State title game with an 11-2 record, as well as helping his reciever, Chris Slaughter (Auburn), to a school record 22 recieving catches. Going into the state title game, Henton had thrown for 1,934 yards and 27 TDs. Hentons squad, Peach County, ended up winning the state title game 35-14. Henton ended his senior total at 2,125 passing yards and 30 TDs against only 7 INTs. He also rushed for more than 800 yards and 10 TDs.

The kid is definitely mobile but he seems to have a very accurate arm. The thing I like most about him is his heart. As a high schooler that will mostly be looked at for his wheels, you arent expected to come back from an injury and lead your school to the state championship off of a golden arm, the way he did. Hes Smith-esq in his ways, but some have clamored that his passing game is better in this stage than Smiths was comming into OSU.

Things could get interesting very fast with these 3 QBs over the next few seasons.
