Next year (2007) and greyshirt talk

OSU will probably lose some games next year with the many departures. No guarantees that this momentum will still be around next year.

Some schollies will open up... early departures (Ginn, maybe Gonzo, Pitt, even Barton?). With how stacked the depth charts are at certain positions (DB & DL), a transfer or two would be understandable. Plus the career ending injuries always seems to snag someone occasionally.

Why not say that OSU will probably lose some games before the start of any season. The probability of going undefeated in any given season is pretty low; it is not as dependent on departures as you state.

Speaking of departures, projecting who may be departing after this season, while the season is currently underway, is something that I have never understood. Enjoy this season, the current players, and "worry" about next year after January 8, 2007.

Look, I'm not writing off next year. I said what I thought would 'probably' happen (hard to maintain this kind of momentum either way... consensus #1 for team and heisman)... and so I agree with others to strike while the iron is hot.

I'm well aware of the preseason naysayers... I was not among them. Then again, I'll take our DC & 9 new defenders before a new QB anyday. That kind of 'departure' is bigger than any other, which I believe our fanbase argued ad nauseum in the texas thread.

buckiprof, I'm absolutely loving this season. I also enjoy looking at next year in a thread dwelling on scholarship limits.

Never said you were writing off next year. Simply stated that before every season, one can say that the Bucks are probably not going to go undefeated and that statement will be correct most of the time.

The departure of a Heisman winning QB will cause some growing pains, however in your post the departures you mentioned, parenthetically, were early departures, which is what I was referencing.

I don't consider OSU as being a program that needs to "maintain momentum". To me, that phrase pertains to WVU or Louisville, i.e., a team that is trying to climb to the top rung in college football. To me, what JT has put in place at OSU is about maintaining a level of excellence. Maybe I'm talking semantics here, but to me they are different things.

I trust you are enjoying the season and you are simply speculating on who may (or may not) leave early after this wonderful season. I guess that I am getting a little older and am "living in the moment" enjoying, no make that savoring, each and every week, each and every player on this team, and as a result, have not let any thoughts of early departures enter my mind. As JT says, "It is what it is" I change that so slightly to "It will be what it will be" (for any early departures) and rest quite comfortably knowing that JT is in charge of the ship.

next year is going to be great to.

Pittman/Wells together will carry OSU very easily but, the new QB has a few great wr's left to make him look better and the o-line will be even better which, will be nuts.

Defense will be better but, those DT'S will be missed like hell. If worthington, denlinger and larimore with some top recruits can be half as good this years DT'S played. OSU might be looking like USC has had these past few years.

Anyone who is expecting to see the same wide open spread next year will be in for a shock...this is Troy's offense right now. JT will grab the throat again next year...

Just my opinion...

I basically agree with this. From his days at YSU, JT seems to run an offense that fits the personnel and which also gives the team the best chance at victory. We have seen the same philosophy so far here at OSU. We have seen so many different formations this year and different plays from said varied formations (there have been several instances where we have thrown the ball out of the power-I!), that I have to agree that next year we won't see as much variety since we will have a new QB.

No doubt. Next year we can all look forward to the "JT needs an offensive coordinator" posts..

By the way, thanks for all of the info guys!!

Agree 100% that this is Troy's offense, but with Gonzo (hopefully), Robo, Hartline, and Small coming back at WR, not to mention Dukes and the incoming WRs, I would think JT will not hesitate all that much to air it out, depnding upon how well Boeckman/Schoenhoft step up. And, if for some reason Henton comes out of nowhere to be a pseudo-Troy...

For JT it is not about the arm, it is about the decision making. If Boeckman (most likely candidate) shows he can do that we may see things open up - otherwise we will button them up. And although Boeckman would be a first year starter it will also be his FIFTH year in the program.

Not to nitpick, but I thought the terms of a greyshirt means the player can't participate in any team functions once the season starts. I don't think Todd was even enrolled in school, as his eligibility clock would've started. After playing in the summer workouts, he came back for winter quarter and counted towards the 25 for the 2004 class.

You are correct.

That's correct, and that's also how the 5 years was determined. It includes the time from when he started that summer, even though he couldn't participate with the team during the season.

With Pittman, Beanie, and Mo returning, and some new RBs coming in, I'd expect JT to switch to more of a running offense. That would allow for the new starting QB to gain confidence and have the opportunity to hit some big plays off of playaction passes. We'll still use the spread formations on passing downs and to mix things up, but I have to think that our offense will likely be built around the run, especially at the start of the season.
