New boxes, new software! Having trouble logging in? Clear browser cookies!

I have to toss my cookies each time I try to open up BP. Just signed in at 8:20 something and had to give BP name and password and yes, I do check "remember me" each time I sign in.

And when I hit the "submit" button for the above post I was sent back to the "toss your cookies" page. So I've cleared out the cookies at least four times in the last two days along with my cache (once only).

FTR, I'm in the same boat. I've cleared cookies multiple times now.

I think that my cookies are being sent over to Admonkey's machine. Bet he doesn't need to log in every time he posts. :paranoid:

You've had to clear your cookies because you run into the situation where once you log in and are redirected back to the site you're immediately logged out again? Meaning you couldn't maintain a log-in at all in a given session?

FWIW, same here...:hatepc:

This was actually happening to me the other day. I'd log in, and the home page would come up again, with me logged out. I clicked "forums" in the nav bar and it then redirected me...logged in, to the forums page. Didn't have a problem after that.

I still need to understand what's happening that has you clearing your cookies.

Is it when you try to log in and submit your credentials that the page reloads and you're logged out again?

That's the issue that requires clearing of your cookies.

Or is it you can log in and post (as you have) but later when you come back hours or days later and you're no longer logged in?

That's an issue with your browser not properly saving the cookies, or not retaining them as long as you would like. But it also means that you are getting the new cookies and are able to log in.

Or is it something else?

For you three still reporting problems (and for anyone else in the same boat), I need to actually know what's happening, more info would be appreciated so we can try and sort this out.

Right, basically everyone should have run into that (except those who have browsers that just accepted the new cookies overwriting the old ones) and would have had to do the single clear and log back in process to fix it.

Once it's been fixed, it shouldn't be necessary again. All that happens there is the old invalid cookies that are stored locally by your browser are dumped and then replaced by the new/good ones. As long as your browser is set to retain those cookies, you should be able to maintain a log-in in a given session.

Also, for those still having problems, how are you getting to the site? Is it a bookmark in your browser? If so, is it pointing to the site with or without the www? If it's without, try adding the www and see if your problem persists.

I am not a browser or cookie expert. We do have some tech-minded people here on BP who can speak to these issues much more competently than I'm able -- but we can cover the basics here.

First (as above) I really have to understand what's happening. I hear people telling me they're still clearing cookies -- I don't hear why they're doing it. Not being snarky, I just want to resolve this as quickly as possible.

And just to be clear, I'm sorry anyone is having problems. I just need to understand the problem in order to try and come up with a solution.

As this is an issue with browsers (as they relate to the changes we've made with the cookies) and not one with the site itself, it becomes much more difficult to understand what's happening without details.

Also, any tech-minded members reading this who feel like you can jump in and help people still having problems troubleshoot, *please* feel enabled to do so.

Are you still logged in while viewing said page ?

I was having login problems, too, until I cleared cookies back to the beginning of time. Just clearing them over a finite period won't work if you've been logging in to BP for as long as you've had your computer. You have to go all the way back.

Haven't had a problem since, other than trying to remember the passwords to my banking and pension accounts since those got cleared too. Almost got locked out of them.

I highly recommend KeePass (http://www.keepass.info) to anyone who wants to manage multiple high-security passwords. Free, open source, and has a long successful and secure history. Worth at least checking out, I couldn't live without it now.

I am sorry everyone has had the issue (and doubly so for those who continue to suffer it in one way or another). Hope everyone understands that it's a by-product of the move from one machine to another, and the changes we made along the way in order to ensure BP is fast and in tip-top shape.

I think Jake made a good point re: clearing your full history with BP. While I can't speak to specific browsers, perhaps he and others can share exactly what they did to clear *all* their cached BP cookies, rather than just the recent ones.

I can use all the help I can get helping others sort these issues out. So thanks to those who have chimed in, and I hope others will as well if they have some insight that may help resolve the issue.

I want these issues to be a thing of the past more than anyone else. Until I know everything's working exactly the way it should be, this upgrade process (which was demanding to an extreme for a few of us) just isn't over for me. So let's make sure everyone is good to go. :)

STEPS TO TRY IF YOU'RE STILL HAVING PROBLEMS:
Still having problems? Continue...
  • Make sure your browser is allowing cookies (it almost certainly is, unless you decided to turn that off -- in which case you're having to log in fresh everywhere you go, not just here.
  • Make sure you've cleared *all* your BP cookies going all the way back.
Still having problems? Continue...
  • If you ARE still having problems after all of that, please provide the following:
    • A description of exactly what happened (for example: "I entered my login and password, hit the button to submit, when the page reloaded I wasn't logged in anymore" OR "I was logged in, walked away for X minutes or hours and when I came back and clicked on something I was logged out.").
    • A description of what message you received, if you got one. Cinci mentioned a vbulletin notice telling him to clear his cookies. While I've never seen or heard of such a thing, it may well be in the system and I just don't know about it. Are we sure it wasn't just the temporary notice I had put in place underneath the navbar telling people to clear their cookies if they were having log-in problems?
    • What browser (and version) you're using so that others with the same who aren't having problems can compare settings.
  • Be patient with me, we will get it fixed. :)
I'm going to have to go and find that old avatar I used years ago that had me smashing my head against the keyboard until it was a bloody mess. I am definitely not IT/tech support material. :)

I have had a few reports from some (not all) using IE8 that even if they check "remember me" they're getting logged out after being idle a long time (more than 15 minutes) on the site -- meaning they have to log back in.

We're investigating that now. It's unrelated to the issue described above (where as soon as you try to log in the site refreshes and you're still logged out).

I just did this myself after googling the problem where I couldn't delete a number of my cookies.

I'll report back, but as of now... it seems to be working for me. I was able to nav to another site and come back without logging in... which I've not been able to do before.

That's what's happening to me. I'm using firefox. I still don't know how to delete cookies.
