Need a little help with shooters

IronBuckI

Calmer than you are.
I haven't played a first person shooter for a couple of years. I was really into Unreal Tournament. Loved the gameplay, the feel of the game, and the weapons. Unreal 2k3 was a disappointment, and I never tried 2k4. what I'm looking for is a first person shooter that I can go online and kill and be killed. I want something that looks nice, but I'm more interested in gameplay than graphics that bog things down, or worrying about a storyline. I just want to shoot people. My graphics card is good (256 MB), and I have 1.3GB of RAM, so those aren't a problem either. My processor is only a 1.3GHz, and I'm not really looking to upgrade yet. Anyone have any suggestions?

Fragfest games are lacking right now. I will suggest Call of Duty 2 though. It has plenty of Deathmatch or Team Deathmatch servers and the gameplay is real nice. Granted you have to use WW2 weapons and coming from Unreal that might be rough, and something your unwilling to do.

I've heard nothing but good things about Call of Duty 2. I like games to be realistic, but what I'm looking for is exactly what you said. A fragfest. I don't necessarily want real. I've been playing more real games, and graphic intense stuff, and now I'm ready for simple. Blowing stuff up, and maybe the occasional instagib.

For a fragfest, you could always try out Quake 4. I havent even really touched it yet. I play a ton of Halflife 2, Counterstrike, and now the new Day of Defeat, which is awesome. Fragfest though, I'd say you have to stick with either Unreal, QUake, etc..........I get bored with them too quick.

I'm like you in the fact that I really didn't like Unreal Tournament 2k3 (I would go so far as to say it sucked) but if you liked the original Tournament Edition then 2K4 is like coming home again to find a Lamborghini in your garage and a water park in your backyard. It plays almost exactly like T.E. but with a few of the better ideas from 2k3 along with some juicy vehicle goodness much like Halo. Graphics still look good to me, obviously a bit dated but not bad at all. As a huge Unreal fan I would highly suggest T.E 2k4, it's probably right up your alley.

I didn't actually say that 2k3 sucked, but that it was a disappointment. I'll check out 2k4.

I get bored with them too, hence the not playing them for the last 2-3 years. If Quake 4 is anything like Quake 3 was, then I'd have to pass....I'll check out some reviews. I played the original halflife, and liked the single player, but didn't like the multi player as much. Of course, that's a pretty old game, and wasn't really made for multi player, that was basically just an add-on. I've also heard good things about Counterstrike and Day of Defeat, which are probably some of the games that I'll go to when I get bored with doing frag fest again.

When is NCAA 07 coming out?

2k3 felt like it took all the skill out of play, favoring running around spraying bullets everywhere. I agree, 2k4 brought it back. Between that and the new mode with vehicles, I played probably 10x as much 2k4 as 2k3.

It looks like I'm going to have to find a copy of UT 2k4. Is there still a decent amount of people playing it online? I know that the original was very popular for a long time, so I assume that if 2k4 is as good, then there'll still be a lot of interest in the game.

Love playing Halo2 on my xbox, not sure if it's a pc port or not. The first one was, I'm guessing the second one is too. Great multiplayer game.
the first port took quite a while to come out on PC.... I wouldn't assume that Halo2 is out yet.

Halo 2 is the ultimate definition of a fragfest. It's too bad, it lost a lot of the skill required by the pistol in Halo1. Skilled players can still do well, but 1v1 fights typically favored the more talented player in Halo1. That is not often the case in Halo2.

I haven't had the time to play it recently, so I don't have a good answer, sorry. Maybe Ginn4Heisman20 has a better idea.

I used to play UT2K4, Return to Castle Wolfenstein, and Rainbow Six games but I'm not sure if many people play those anymore....You may want to wait until the end of the year/beginning of 2007 to get Unreal 2k7, or pick up F.E.A.R. (currently out), but I'm not sure if your computer can play these without bogging down. I've switched from PC online gaming to console and play alot of Call of Duty 2 (out on PC as well) and some Halo 2 on the Xbox360. Will definitely get Halo 3, Ghost Recon 3 and many other FPSer's when they come out.

Just picked up COD 2 a couple of weeks ago on my 360 and was wondering if you are playing online how much lag have you seen. The very first game I played I think I got dizzy from all the lag.................

I get lag in about 1 out of 3 games, so you have to be patient. The developers are working on a patch to download that addresses the lagging issues. Lag is created by the host of the game having a slow connection to the internet and trying to host a game with too many people. If someone has a solid connection though (good downloading/uploading speeds) they should have no problem hosting an 8-player game. I have a cable connection and can host 5-6 with no lag, and can sometimes handle 8 but not usually. Send me a message with your Gamertag and I'll add you to my friend's list if you want a good online game.
