Nebraska and Michigan really need to decide whether they want to be top-10 football programs once again.

Looks like Nebraska is happy with their gradual slide into irrelevancy. 1997 was a long time ago in football terms.

I find it ironic that we were just discussing Nebraska trying to emulate Oregon and the inherent issues of not having Nike. Then Nebraska goes out and snags Oregon's little brother's head coach.

You're doing it wrong, Nebraska. People talk about how hard it is to recruit people to the other OSU, but it's literally right down the road from Eugene where the Ducks are flying top 4. I don't know how this advances Nebraska football.

Nebraska's proximity to TX = OSU's proximity to Atlanta

It's still been crucial for them, however.
2009 and 2010 teams had 21 and 23 players from Texas.
2012 had 18.
Today there's 12.

Gone are the days when Nebraska can bring in locals and stay prominent. And nobody successful is filling out a team with kids from Colorado, Kansas, and Iowa either.
They've relied on getting a good chunk of talent out of Texas most of my life

I'm curious to see what his staff looks like, if he gets Frost for OC... then we could be looking at a "coach in waiting" situation.. who knows... doesn't scream WE'RE WINNERS

Ok, sure? Where else are they getting top level talent?

When they were in the Big XII they played against Texas schools and the narrative was that they could draw talent from there because they played in state. As we all know, they don't have that going for them anymore.
I agree with the above but I think they need to clean up in the Midwest if they hope to return to glory.

Keeping Vince marrow would have helped.
Hiring a coach that can and will recruit would have helped.
Piecing together a defense that outperforms the Indiana D would as well. That is why the Scott frost rumors made no sense.

Mike Riley has never coached a season with fewer than four losses.

I don't buy the argument that it's so difficult to win at Oregon State that 9-4 or 7-5 there is a supreme accomplishment. Baylor is winning ten games a year now. TCU has gone from nothing to being a top ten team. In the span of Riley's mediocre tenure at Oregon State, Stanford has gone from having the worst program in Oregon State's very own conference to having more success than Mike Riley could even dream of. Duke had a Top 25 season. Hawaii, Cincinnati and Boise State went to BCS bowls. Brady Hoke had a 12-win season at Ball State.

It's just another bargain bin zero-ambition hire for a B1G program.

This may reassure some people.

A lot of positive comments from Pac-12 watchers.

Riley didn't have very many resources at Oregon State, plus had to go head to head against the Nike machine.
i think he did a pretty good job with what he had. Cooks won the Belitnikoff last year.
Sean Mannion threw for 37 TDs last year, and has 83 for his career.

edit: one of my co-workers is married to a guy who played there. i'll ask him.
