Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Wiki page had glorious edits before being taken down.

One was:

"On December 4, 2014, Riley was named head coach of the Nebraska Cornhuskers.

In 2015, Riley led the Cornhuskers to a slow painful death never really making it to the next level just as he had at Oregon State."

@alexhortdog95, what was the reaction in Lincoln to the Callahan hire back in the day? That pre-dated my message boarding career and I can't recall the reaction to the hire...

I was actually here at Offutt for a space weather course when Bo was hired back in December '07 and remember much celebration.

Well, lemme tell ya...

It was the original coaching search and firing of Solich that made that so toxic. Most people thought Bo would be the guy here, and he didn't get a sniff at the job.
Ironic, huh?

So, Peterson has that epic, "We will not let this program gravitate into mediocrity" speech, then all his proposed suitors leave him. We're talking guys like Dave Wannstadt and a bunch of others. I even think Gruden was in that mix. 40 days later, just before signing day, he hires Callahan.

People were like, "WTF? You mean the guy that just got fired from the Raiders?!?"

I tried to be as positive as possible. I was like, "well the guy DID go to a Super Bowl..."

And then, it was like...

Yeah, I think you guys are still trying to claw back out from the hole that hire dug. It was just such an awful fit schematically and culturally. I mean, you had a system in place that led to a dynasty and bore the greatest college team I've ever seen ('95). Sure it was slipping some, but going a totally different, and I mean TOTALLY, direction was just bizarre. I always thought it would have been wiser to do what Wiscy would do a few years later and hire a guy to just keep things going. Not sure what the options may have been, but just about anything would have been better than Callahan.

Frankly, I'm not sure the program will ever fully recover from that.

From what I've heard and read a little this firing and hiring had more to do with Bo's personality than winning. However when the best thing everyone can say about your new coach is "He's the nicest guy we've ever met" ..... something is lacking.

Let me clear one thing up - this didn't begin to happen under Steve Peterson. It started to happen in 2001.

I call it CO62-36. It was the disease that festered in Boulder, Colorado, on the day after Thanksgiving in 2001.

It's like the turf toe that a sprinter can't get rid of. It was like when Tyson got blasted by Douglas in Tokyo. He was never the same.

Blasted in the National Championship game by Da U. The very next year - 7-7. A streak of over 30+ years of winning seasons...gone. Craig Bohl, then D coordinator. Gone. Bring in Bo.

The rest is history.

I think the big problem with Bo's personality (aside from the theatrics and temper) was that 9-4 had become acceptable. Every single player that hit the send button on a Tweet after Bo got the axe was in disbelief because they each thought they'd just had so many successful seasons. 9-4 at Nebraska is not a successful season, that's a rebuilding year.

The whole thing is very reminiscent of Earle Bruce's tenure at Ohio St. Bo had seven years; the defense wasn't getting better and some very good teams were being sabotaged by some horrifically boneheaded QB play. It was time to part ways.
