Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

Kirk Herbstreit's Nebraska prediction: College GameDay analyst 'sorry' about picking Huskers to win B1G West

“I was wrong,” Herbstreit wrote this week on Twitter, when asked facetiously by a user if he still liked Nebraska in the West Division. “Sorry.”

Initially, Herbstreit picked Nebraska to have its best season under Frost.

“I got Nebraska,” Herbstreit said before Week 0. “They were 3-9 last year. They had all nine losses by one possession. They found ways to lose games. I think Scott Frost can have a great year with Casey Thompson at quarterback.”

Technically with just 1 conference loss, Corn isn't actually mathematically eliminated from winning the B1G West yet.

Nope. They're only a game behind Northwestern, and a half game behind Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.
Don't forget that in 2018, Northwestern won the Big Ten West, with an 8-4 record. They were 8-1 in the Big Ten (losing only to the blue nerds). Out of conference, they lost to Duke 21-7, Notre Dame 31-21, and Akron 39-34. AKRON?!?!? It looks a little like Nebraska this year, doesn't it? I mean, it looks like what Nebraska COULD do, theoretically. It's in the realm of possibilities (as is the stupid meteor that never seems to happen when *ichigan and Penn State are playing).

If they figure out how to play football, and win all their games, they need Northwestern to lose 2 games. Northwestern plays Wisconsin, Ohio State, Penn State, and others. Northwestern is going to lose 2. So.... Nebraska just needs to win all of their games. Except I think they play Oklahoma, still. That game doesn't mean anything to any standings.

It was a smarmy apology at best.

Meh.
That apology was light years better (that doesn't even make sense!) than any apologies Desmond Howard has ever made. Or remember how Trev Alberts kept saying that Ohio State didn't belong in the national championship race in 2002? Or, I'm sure others can go on for a million of examples of these "experts" being wrong and then acting like no one called them out. I don't think I ever saw or heard any of them apologize.
"Smarmy" or not, at least he admitted he was wrong.... this time.

Trev Alberts did actually write an article for ESPN.com in January 2003 apologizing to Ohio State fans for his antagonism and enumerated a bunch of reasons why Ohio State proved to be the best team, in light of USC blowing out Iowa in the Rose Bowl which was the night before that Fiesta Bowl. Unfortunately, I cannot find it in the Wayback Machine because there are limited archives from that time period. I am 110% certain he wrote one -- I remember reading it and thinking it was telling that Alberts penned something while Mark May instead chose to doubled-down on his heel turn.

Gene Wojciechowski was another writer that published a mea culpa, and his actually is still available:

Most of the primary, top-level articles are still readable.

Here's the ESPN 2002/03 Bowl landing page:

And here is SI's:

I read his tone as being like a 14-year-old kid screaming to his parents "I'm sorry for being alive!"

Nebraska coaching search: Wisconsin DC Jim Leonhard calls early-season firings 'worst situation' for players

"I think it is unfortunate," Leonhard told reporters Tuesday. "I think it needs to change. I mean what are you doing? I hate for what it does for the kids at Nebraska. I hate what it does for the players. You think of all these situations that you are asking guys to do so much and buy in and be a team. Then you make these decisions. What are you telling them? Then when kids make decisions to leave, you jump on their backs. I think it puts the kids in the worst situation. Because how are they supposed to feel when they are getting preached to do things the right way and be committed to things and all of a sudden then there are drastic changes two or three weeks into the season? It just looks bad. I think that needs to be changed more than anything because it puts off the wrong message on what is really important."

Corn just got criticized by a coach they apparently have interest in....
