College football's under-pressure coaches entering 2022 season, per Josh Pate

SCOTT FROST, NEBRASKA
10961106.jpg

What Pate says: “It’s right there — everything Scott Frost needs to have a much better season than he’s had so far is right there. They have done, next to USC, the most work in the transfer portal than any Power Five program out there. I think the number is 16, the amount of kids they’ve taken. Their over-under win total is 7.5. They have not made a bowl yet under cost Frost. The oddsmakers feel it. The schedule is very favorable and also the portal has given them a transfusion of talent.”

Nebraska football: OL Nouredin Nouili ruled ineligible for 2022 season due to failed drug test

Nebraska offensive lineman Nouredin Nouili was ruled ineligible for the 2022 football season due to a failed drug test. Nouili made the announcement on Twitter, saying he would not be able to play in any games this fall. However, he revealed he would be able to be with the program for the duration of the season, despite his ineligibility.

“This spring I was informed by the NCAA that due to a failed drug test, I am ineligible for the 2022 season,” Nouili wrote in a statement. “I would like to apologize to my family, teammates, coaches and Husker fans for my error in judgement. It is an honor to be a part of this football program and represent this University and I do not take that responsibility lightly. Thanks to Coach Frost, our athletic and university administration for allowing me to continue to be part of this program in 2022. I look forward to returning to the field to represent Nebraska in 2023. Go Big Red!”

Nouili played in every game during the 2021 season and started the final seven games at left guard. Originally a walk-on when he joined the program, Nouili was put on scholarship prior to the Ohio State game last season.

Nebraska football names Casey Thompson starting QB against Northwestern Wildcats

Nebraska has named Casey Thompson, a transfer from Texas, as its starting quarterback for next week's season opener against Northwestern in Dublin, Ireland.

Coach Scott Frost, speaking Thursday night on his radio show, said Thompson "will take the first rep" against Northwestern. Thompson, who transferred to Nebraska in January, started 10 games for Texas last season and led the Big 12 with 24 touchdown passes while passing for 2,113 yards and completing 63.2% of his attempts.

He had been competing with Chubba Purdy, a transfer from Florida State, and Logan Smothers for the top job. Frost said he "wouldn't be surprised" if more than one quarterback played this season for Nebraska. Thompson underwent surgery on his throwing thumb this summer after playing with ligament damage for much of last season.

Frost also discussed the impact of new offensive line coach Donovan Raiola, a former NFL lineman who spent the past four seasons on staff with the Chicago Bears.

"He's coaching them hard," Frost said. "I laugh with the guys because there's about 15-20 vomits every day from offensive linemen, and it's not because they're not in shape. He's just working them hard. I think they love it. He's kind of freed them up to be aggressive, and I love how they're coming off the ball."
