Nebraska Cornhuskers (corn)

College football: 10 teams primed to bounce back in 2022

NEBRASKA CORNHUSKERS (3-9)

Nebraska lost eight games this season by one score, a storyline that has been mentioned many times when talking about the 2022 Huskers squad. Hypothetically, if the Huskers won them all, they would’ve finished 11-1 and played for a Big Ten title. Of course, the games actually have to be played and the results speak for themselves, but hopefully Scott Frost has something to build off of, otherwise 2022 could be it for the Nebraska legend. The addition of former Texas QB Casey Thompson is exciting.

Just sayin': I'm not really sold on Corn here, I think they were probably just a "throw in" to come up with 10 teams......

Nebraska football program suspends red balloon tradition over global helium shortage

The Nebraska football program is taking the air out of one of its biggest traditions.

The team will not release balloons following its first touchdown at home -- something it has done since the 1960s -- according to an announcement from athletic director Trev Alberts. The Cornhuskers' tradition will be put on hold as a result of a global helium shortage.

"So we've been asked by the university, the helium that we are getting as a university, we need to use for medical purposes at [University of Nebraska Medical Center] in Omaha.

"And so we are this year not going to be providing the red balloons for the first time at Memorial Stadium."

The helium shortage is related to the United States' sanctions against Russia, ESPN report. While the shortage is forcing Nebraska to halt the balloon tradition, environmental concerns have also been brought to Alberts' attention over in recent years.

Back in 2016, a Nebraska man filed a lawsuit against the school, claiming that the balloons were a health hazard to children and animals once they deflated and landed on the ground. Additionally, Nebraska's student government -- though they have no control over the situation -- voted to end the balloon tradition in November.

Alberts added that Nebraska's marking department is brainstorming potential alternate celebrations, which may include digital replications of the red balloons being released.

I suppose this is kind of off-topic for a football forum, but I was looking up what the uniforms looked like on the Internet, and stumbled onto this article about AAU membership. As many of you probably recall, Nebraska was voted out of the AAU in 2011. Seems that it hasn't had much of an impact on them academically. Makes me wonder if AAU membership is something the B1G should even worry about.

“But since [our loss of membership in the AAU], our enrollment has grown, we have become more attractive to non-resident and international students, our research trajectory has continued to exceed the pace of most AAU institutions, we competed for and won designation as a (University Affiliated Research Center), one of only 14 in the country, we have tripled our national academy memberships, and our rankings, for what they are worth, in U.S. News and World Report have steadily improved, now being at the highest in the history of the university. I guess my regret is that our expulsion from AAU didn’t come sooner.” - Harvey Perlman, University of Nebraska Chancellor, 2014 State of the University Address

I may be way off here, and @ORD_Buckeye can correct me, but my understanding was that two major things hurt them. One, that they don’t have a medical school on campus. Two, that AG research doesn’t count in the research grant tallies. I mean, what’s more important, research that leads to increased crop yields or sexual habits of spider monkeys?

Earmarked FDA research doesn't count because it's politically (rather than peer review) awarded. Most other federal research dollars (NASA, NIH, DoD) go through a pretty rigorous peer review application process. Ag money is essentially political pork. Plenty of AAU members don't have an on-campus medical school (Berkeley, Texas, Purdue, IU and Illinois) but are in no danger of getting the boot. Nebraska was weak across the board.

I just wonder how well the AAU membership criteria lines up with what is important to the Big Ten Academic Alliance (BTAA). I think the impact of a prospective university on the BTAA matters more to the B1G than AAU membership, but I don't know how strongly those things correlate. In any case, if Nebraska is doing better academically now than when they were in the AAU, that could be due to the benefits of being in the BTAA having a greater impact than the being kicked out of the AAU.

Are we talking about the sexual habits of spider monkeys in general or increasing their sexual habits? Your post was ambiguous.
TIA.
