Game Thread Nebraska Cornhuskers at tOSU, Oct 6th, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/2

I cant wait for this game. Should be electric. While I'm proud of how our defense played against Wisconsin, I am more than a little nervous about how we will contain the Buckeye's offense. Probably the best offense we will face. I do think NU has improved the D since the UCLA disaster. The younger, faster got some valuable playing time. In a game like this I don't see the coaches relying on playing too many inexperienced players. Against Wisconsin we played our base 4-3 so our three senior LB's were on the field a lot. I'm curious to see how Pelini will approach this game. I would guess we would go to our nickel set to start the game that we usually roll with when we face spread offenses. Evans needs to come up big at his nickel back spot...that is an important key. Tackling is also going to HAVE to be good or else Miller will turn a 5 yard run to a 50 yard run. Hopefully we can contain Miller and make him stay in the pocket...that's a big challenge though. Our offense has been good all year, with the exception of two quarters against UCLA. To me, I think Abdullah has become one of our most valuable players. I love Rex and his hard nose running will be needed, but Abdullah has really come on and has added a speed dimension. I also think Kenny Bell will be more involved in the gameplan...maybe with some WR sweeps or something to try to loosen up the Buckeye defense.

I wish I could feel more confident going into this game. But as we Husker fans have witnessed over the last 7 years, we are a very inconsistent team. Just when we look like we are about to turn the corner after a big win, we go out the next week and stink it up (like against Northwestern last year). I do know if we turn the ball over this week, we will loose the game and we will not be able to overcome a lackluster start. I really hope we can pull the upset out, but I just don't think its gonna happen. I would not be surprised if we get smoked badly. After all that's what we are used to these days.

And yet he was 54% against UCLA & 58% against Wisconsin, neither of which are that strong defensively.

He had OOC inflated stats last september too. Reality settled in during B1G play, also starting against Wisconsin (who was similarly challenged on D last year).
Through the first for weeks of the season (Nebraska's 4 non-conference games) last year, Martinez was 74th in the country in pass efficiency. Through the first four games this year, he was 10th. Reality setting in during Big Ten play or not, that is a statistical improvement that can't be ignored. He still has an incredibly awkward throwing motion.

I still think Nebraska loses, but don't kid yourself, the Nebraska offense is better than what it was last season (obviously Ohio State's is as well). Nebraska is averaging 55 more rushing yards per game, 47 more yards passing per game, and about 8 more points per game.

I hope we do but my gut feeling is that we don't win this one. Not yet sold on our defense showing up for 2 straight games. If this was the Buckeye defense of old, I would say we win and win big. Also, I'm hoping to see more progression in Braxton's throwing.

Yeah, I think winning @ MSU and it being such a tough, gutty victory makes me feel like OSU comes out flat this weekend and struggles on both sides of the ball in the first half. It would be hard to come back from a 24-10 deficit at halftime against a Nebraska team with this type of offense.

The offense should eventually be able to click like they did against Cal, but I'm concerned about the consistency and the ability of the defense to not give up big plays. I think they can hold in the redzone on long drives, but I'm thinking Nebraska might have 2-3 50+ yard plays.

To win this game Miller needs to be able to throw for 250+ yards. He will get something going on the ground as well, but in order to keep drives going and answer scores, he'll have to be able to make more than a couple intermediate and deep throws. If OSU wins this game, I think it will be because Miller had his first real 'break out' game (aka 400+ yards of offense).

With Urban Meyer coaching and what happened last year coupled with the caliber of the team we're playing, no way in hell we come out flat.

Hopefully Urban and the staff can find a way to channel all of the energy throughout the day and it explodes in the first 10-12 minutes of the game and the Bucks get out to a good start. Make Martinez move around a little bit, get our DE's upfield and our LB's and Safeties running down hill to pop the run and we'll be ok

Martinez has markedly improved his passing, especially compared to last year. This is also a very different and more susceptible OSU defense, unless urban has permanently squashed the 10 yd cushion, conservative D from Fickell and withers. It failed miserably with this lass rush, tackling and pursuit.

I was simply poking a hole in the inflated passing efficiency rating.

Last year Taylor ran for 400+ yds & 7 TDs in OOC play. He rarely broke 60 in a B1G game, though some, home opener against OSU saw him run wild. I do not recall any such game.

the main reason I'm not concerned about that: the Buckeyes didn't play a great game Saturday, and they know it. 3 turnovers will never get it done on a consistent basis, so they have plenty to focus on as this game approaches. B1G home opener, night, coming off a performance they know should have been better...I'm not concerned about being flat.

Since my new tradition has brought us some level of success in my superstitious mind.

Wow, I thought with the way Martinez can hurt you with his feet that bootlegs would right away be part of the offensive package. That's surprising.

It's not accurate, either. We've rolled Martinez out at least one time in each game this season. In years past we haven't, but this year we're doing it more.

He's as spotty on the run as he is in the pocket. One play he's Joe Montana, the next he's Ryan Leaf. The only thing is, outside the pocket he has a better option of running the ball.

Personal opinion, with no insider info to back this up - you guys should see a very different offensive look than what we've done the first five games. Beck's playbook has barely been opened this year, and I expect to see several plays for the first time. We'll see 1) How you guys react to it, and 2) If we can even properly execute them. I'm hoping for a fun game, but it could be a comedy of errors.
