Game Thread Nebraska Cornhuskers at tOSU, Oct 6th, 8 ET, ABC/ESPN/2

My biggest worry here is Nebraska forcing Ohio State's linebackers to diagnose plays quickly and make plays in space. It's not going to be MSU just smashing it with an i-back, it's primarily read options. Should be interesting.

Yes, this is exactly what Nebraska will try to do.

And if you bring up a safety for run fit, Martinez has been showing the capability to capitalize on the passing advantage. It's slightly shocking, but nice to see from a kid still learning the position. The Buckeyes need to bring pressure however they can muster it. It will affect Martinez more than the average QB. And Husker fans know Ohio State has the DL talent to cause problems.

One thing Nebraska won't do is bootlegs. They usually just have Martinez in the shotgun, or take a 7 step drop and deliver the ball. Never understood that, but it is what it is.

7 step drop will aid us tremendously with our front 4

Don't worry about the safeties in either place. If they're not missing tackles, they're blowing coverage.

I expect a shoot-out in this game.

Let me rephrase. Anything longer than a 3 mississippi will aid our front 4

At the start of the game, Martinez will make his usual deep drops with confidence. He usually gets to his second and third reads (3 or 4 Mississippi) and makes a good decision. But the first few times a DE comes crashing in and suprises him, they'll be in his head for the rest of the series.

At that point even the slightest amount of pocket pressure will have him making his first read (1 or 2 Mississippi) and pulling the trigger to run or pass. If you're DC is smart, they'll see this on tape and be ready for it.

One would think our OC would switch up the playcalling at this point with bootlegs, but apparently those are not in the playbook. Instead he calls more deep drops and abandons the run game. It happened in our blowout losses last year and in the UCLA game this year.

For my sake, I hope they have finally learned from this, but I have my doubts.

Well hopefully your OC hasn't figured this out, and Williams, Hankins, and Simon make a QB sandwich with Martinez on the very first play.

I don't think he stands a chance in hell with long drop backs. That is exactly what you DON'T want to do against this team. That read option will have some success on the edge, as our LBers have trouble fighting off blocks and making plays. We'll probably see a lot more zone from our secondary to help out in that department.

He's in the shotgun probably 80% of the time, so when I say deep drop backs, it's ususally while in shotgun.

As far as the running game - the zone read is basically the staple play of this offense. Last year they used to run a lot more true option spinkled in with the zone read, but they've maybe only run it once this year. I think they're trying to limit the hits on Martinez. Plus we fumble enough as it is....the option requires extremely accurate pitch timing if you want to run it right.
