NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

Message board fans weren't really a concern.
My point was that was the impression it made on almost everyone, which made the 'played it right' comment a strange one
USC knew they would have to take the PR hit anyway, but they decided they didn't want to take it in the leadup to the hearing.
That makes more sense, the previous wording seemed like they were trying to avoid the PR hit from linking his firing with the sanctions. I understand that rationale better, even if I don't agree with it.

USC's defiance throughout this process didn't help them, and firing an implicated assistant would be at least a small step in the right direction.

Sorry for the confusion, I meant they played it right in that they knew there would be a PR hit and decided to push it off.

Hard to "fire an implicated assistant" while simultaneously maintaining his innocence. Sends a mixed message.

If his contract ended in May, they would have declined to renew it then. It was a football decision, pure and simple.

May was near the end of the investigation. Are you saying that had his contract ended in January that it still would not have been renewed?

Regardless of what really was the reason for his not getting retained, the outside appearance to the great majority of folks is that he was not kept on due to his action that helped result of the serious infractions levied against USC. Appearance does not have to equal fact.

Mike Garrett better give thanks to the god of deranged egomaniacs he wasn't born in China.

A senior civil aviation official reportedly killed himself in Guangzhou on June 24 by standing in front of an approaching train. The incident is believed to be related to the ongoing corruption investigations within China's civil aviation system

Apparently standing in front of a bullet train is preferable to what that particular governing body does when they catch you cheating.

^this^

And despite USC blundering their stance wrt to the investigation - no one is going to convince me that USC wasn't aware of what message this would send to the public and the NCAA.

But just for grins..lets say it had nothing to do with the investigation...that only leaves one other option: performance.

Does anyone believe USC didn't keep their RB coach around because their backs have not been productive or that they are not stacked for the future?

Reggie Bush (benefits)
LenDale White
CJ Gable (Injured)
Joe McKnight (benefits)
Stafon Johnson (Injury)
Allen Bradford
Dillon Baxter

The problem with McNair at USC hasn't been talent or productivity...it is violations. I think it is pretty clear why his contract wasn't renewed...but maybe I am just hating.

It is clear his contract was not going to be renewed. Kiffin could have fired him in January or they could have just let it expire. Either way it would have looked attributable to the violations. In January it might have affected recruiting though.

USC is putting out a mixed message. "We didn't do anything and the NCAA is just jealous of our success!"
"Ooops! McNair did do something wrong and we're letting him go! And maybe Garrett needs to go also!" "See NCAA!" "We acknowledge we did wrong!" "Now cut us a deal!"

Same thing happened in Chicago a couple months ago. The guy in charge of the Metra rail system was caught stealing and he kissed a train.
