NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

From Feb. 4, 2010:

Inside the recruitment of Seantrel Henderson, nation's top O-lineman

Story Highlights
In a last-minute decision on Signing Day, Seantrel Henderson chose USC

Henderson has yet to qualify academically and hasn't signed letter of intent

Should USC get hit by the NCAA, Henderson could re-open his recruitment

NEW YORK -- At 3:31 p.m. Wednesday, Sean Henderson, the father of the nation's top uncommitted recruit, Seantrel Henderson, received a phone call from USC coach Lane Kiffin. Curious which school the left tackle planned to announce he would attend on television two hours later, Kiffin expressed concern to the father, who was bowling with his son at the CBS College Sports Fieldhouse, adjacent to the network's studio.

"You're nervous, coach?" Sean Henderson said. "I'm nervous, too!"

Kiffin wanted to reassure the family once more. He spoke with Sean and then Seantrel, a 6-foot-8, 330-pound senior at Cretin-Derham Hall (St. Paul, Minn.), telling both that any upcoming penalties from the NCAA's infractions committee would not make the Trojans ineligible for future bowl games. USC is expected to appear in front of the committee between Feb. 19 and 21 to answer charges of major rules violations.

Henderson is even worse. He knew USC was going before the infractions committe. Even held of on his LOI until afterwards....and still picked USC.

This reminds me of Oden and Conley getting a letter from Matta that if tOSU received a postseason ban that would affect them, they would be released from their LOI.

Henderson should have required that same promise from Kiffin.

This is from an IndyStar article from 11-10-05, which is no longer linkable.

Buckeyes coach Thad Matta sent a letter to the recruits, including Lawrence North seniors Greg Oden and Mike Conley Jr., stating the Buckeyes would release each player from his letter of intent in the unlikely event upcoming sanctions keep the school out of the 2007 NCAA Tournament.

The sanctions would stem from recruiting violations that occurred before Matta got to the school, and for which Ohio State already served a self-imposed ban for the 2005 NCAA Tournament. An NCAA infractions committee will meet Dec. 9-10 to determine if there should be more penalties.

"In the 30-odd years I've been doing this, that is totally unprecedented," Bob Gibbons, one of the nation's most respected recruiting analysts, said of the agreement. "It's certainly a move of integrity on (Ohio State's) part and should be reassuring to Mike Conley and Greg Oden and the other kids. But I've never heard of it."

Said Dave Telep of national scouting service scout.com: "That's not standard policy, but in a case like this, it's a heck of a thing for (Matta) to do. That tells you what a stand-up guy he is."

The normal routine before signing day is for colleges to send a blank letter of intent form to recruits. Along with that, Matta sent the letter offering the possible release, Ohio State spokesman Dan Wallenberg said.

Wallenberg said the letter was signed by Matta, Ohio State athletic director Gene Smith and school president Karen Holbrook

There is some talk that Kiffin was lied to by Garrett and was told little was gonna happen.
Wonder what ol' Kif is thinking about his prime gig, now?

I would guess SC will have depth problems this year and could have another 8-9 win season. (a disaster by USC standards)
If Barkley gets hurt it could go down the tubes fast. Starting Henderson at LT does not guarantee Barkley will go unscathed.

I have to say, even though the NCAA drug their feet on this forever, I am pretty impressed with the penalty they laid down. What i'm not impressed with is the joke ESPN is. I watched sportscenter all morning while I was at the Y, other than the bottom line, they barely even addressed the situation. Same with ESPN.com. Just a small headline with a link. Talk about trying to sweep it under the rug.

They've been talking about it a lot the past hour or two. Lot of big stories today...and lets face it, the shine is a little off of USC's star compared to 2-3 years ago.

Must have started up just as I was leaving. At least they are mentioning it.

No surprise that the Pac10 made a move today, anything to take some of the sting out of the USC announcement.

I'm a little bit surprised at some of the talk regarding the student-athletes that were hoodwinked by kiffin.

Some of you are acting like this guy doesn't have a history of snaking commitments out of 5-star recruits who are destined for dissapointment.
