NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

So, Pete Carroll leaving for the NFL before all of this hits... seems to reflect badly on him as a man of integrity, or just a man (not that he had much going for him in that sense anyways)... thoughts?
I'm not fond of a system that can't do much of anything to affect the people who actually commit violations. It may encourage programs to self-police as they will bear the consequences, but a lot of kids who didn't do anything wrong wind up in the crossfire, which is shameful.

Normally I would feel the same, but this case might be an exception.

Juniors and seniors get a free pass to transfer. This investigation was ongoing when underclassmen signed their LOIs.

And let's not pretend that USC attracts a bunch of wide eyed innocents who are out for the greater glory of Trojan football.

Agreed.

It is not as if this came out of no where. This has been going on for a long time. Even when Sentrel Henderson committed he was worried this might happen. So to me, they knew what they were signing up for. No one in this whole situation was blindsided.

As far as free transfers, every USC SR and JR can transfer and be eligible now. Bowl ban takes up the rest of their eligibility.

1.Bylaw 13.1.1.3.3: No release needed to contact student athletes if school is has postseason ban for the rest of their eligibility.

2.Bylaw 14.8.2: The COI can recommend a waiver to allow student athletes to transfer and play immediately if ban is for the rest of their eligibility.

As for incoming freshman, USC would have to release them from their scholarship. Think Lane would let SH walk?

thanks to bylawblog for the info.

So while the majority of the USC football team hangs its head Mitch Mustain is throwing a party.

Yes, Mitch Mustain could be the "ultimate" college free agent here.

Just funnin'. Carroll never evidenced much integrity; this simply makes the whole thing more apparent.

USC sources, who requested anonymity because they are not authorized to speak about the situation publicly, said they were bracing for the worst. One said the school probably would utilize an appeal process.

Asked if the sanctions were appropriate, a source said, "It depends how you look at it. It is if you're a UCLA fan."

Maybe I'm just being greedy...

but if Bush accepted benefits and is ineligible...why would they only vacate "some" wins from 2004. He would surely have been ineligible for all of 2005 as well.

I was thinking the same thing. I think the story has just concentrated on 2004 because that was a BCS Title Year for USC.
