NCAA punishes USC - Reggie Bush, OJ Mayo, Dwayne Jarrett, Joe McKnight investigation

More NCAA trouble for USC football?

Coach Pete Carroll's hiring of a former NFL tactician to help with the team's kicking game may have violated rules covering the use of consultants.

USC football Coach Pete Carroll employed a former NFL tactician last season to help with the team's punting and kicking game, an arrangement that may have violated NCAA rules that prohibit consultants from coaching, The Times has learned.
Carroll's action could widen a continuing investigation by the NCAA, the governing body of major college sports, which has been looking at USC football for more than three years and the school's basketball program for the last year. The probe has been examining specific allegations of improper payments to two players as well as the broader question of whether USC has lost "institutional control" of its athletics department.
The new issue involves the employment of Pete Rodriguez, who has coached for several professional franchises. In an interview with The Times, he acknowledged that he attended USC practices, monitored games and offered Carroll behind-the-scenes advice on matters ranging from the needs of individual players to avoiding penalties during punt returns.
"I would watch practice and tell Pete, 'Hey, this guy needs this and this,' " Rodriguez said. He said he believed that his work complied with National Collegiate Athletic Assn. regulations that cap the number of coaches a team can have and that restrict consultants.
But experts contacted by The Times said the type of assistance that Rodriguez described could constitute a serious violation.

Scandal after scandal, when will hammer fall on Trojans?

LOS ANGELES -- It's been since 2005 that Reggie Bush played at USC.

More than three years since Yahoo! Sports blew the roof off the sucker with the report that Bush accepted cash and benefits worth $300,000 from some would-be agents.

Fifteen months since an investigation of basketball star O.J. Mayo was made public.

Two-and-half months since it was reported the basketball coach slipped Mayo $1,000.

Fifty days since that alleged greaser of the palm, Tim Floyd, resigned.

Admit it, when you heard Thursday that the football program had perhaps committed an NCAA violation in the midst of all this, you were floored.
You had to be. This can't be happening again, can it? The Los Angeles Times reported that Pete Carroll might have violated rules by using former NFL assistant Pete Rodriguez as a consultant.

Carroll, speaking at the Pac-10 media days on Thursday, said the issue was cleared through the compliance department and was not a violation.

That's a relief. Would this be the same compliance department that passed Mayo and his entourage through the hallowed gates of USC? Was that the compliance department that slept while receiver DeWayne Jarrett literally slept -- in an apartment he shared with Matt Leinart that was partially paid for by Leinart's dad?

Or maybe we're being too harsh on the compliance folks as they pass through this mushrooming mess. All they're supposed to do is their jobs -- keep watch on the athletic department and make sure no one breaks NCAA rules.

Cont'd ...

Hmm... Pete says he ran the 'consultant situation' through the USC compliance department and it was deemed to not be a violation so Pete proceeded.

While the act in and of itself is a minor deal...if the NCAA says it WAS a violation AFTER the USC compliance department reviewed it and approved it..it takes on larger implications wrt to institutional control IMO.

Might be a bigger can of worms than I first thought.....

What a mess...and the NCAA's lengthy investigation isn't doing anyone any favors or helping any one involved look better.

So the NCAA can investigate the Memphis basketball program, organize their findings and determine that they have to vacate an entire season based on those findings all within a year.

Reggie Bush's family has an agent pay them hundreds of thousands of dollars plus buy them a house and...

Memphis =/= USC

what do you not understand?

Yup- Memphis is just a small program in a small conference. And they got, essentially, a slap on the wrist.

U$C is the only major power west of Texas, in the highest revenue sport in the land, a sport that the NCAA has been unable to show any ability to effectively manage (see postseason, or lack there of).

Ain't nothing happening to U$C.

This is what will happen to USC:

-Bush's records (personal) will get removed from the record book
-Bush will keep his Heisman (not up to NCAA)
-USC will get "Failure to Monitor" slap on the wrist

The bigger thing they need to worry about is the OJ Mayo/Tim Floyd ordeal

At least thats the word from some of my friends who attend USC. They are all signed up for Rivals/Scout and are diehard fans. This is what the fans will believe happen.

I take it for what its worth, but it seems the most likely situation.
