How about defensive play calling? I made a custom playbook so I could use 3-3-5 and 4-3, because the 3-3-5 has trouble when the other player goes goal line (like some people do all game), while the 4-3 seems to handle that reasonably well.

For the most part, I blitz a couple LBs and a SS (from the 3-3-5 stack, so the SS plays near the line anyway) and play man behind the blitz. This brings lots of pressure, but I have to basically telegraph I'm in man coverage if they are spreading the field.

I also play cover 2 man (and press a lot of the time because the safeties are there if anyone gets burned).

In obvious run downs when the defense isn't in goal line, I play 3-3-5 bear and blitz all the LBs, so it's like a 5 man front (because the OLBs line up outside the ends) and the MLB comes in between the DT and DE.

Anyway, just curious what other people do on defense. I haven't really changed my play calling on defense in a couple years, so I wouldn't mind fresh ideas.

So this person is doing what you do but with GL? You mentioned Peyton Manning and is obscene use of audibles (especially in Madden). Is he coming to the line calling All Verts every play?

Most the people posting here play football as it is played in real life. The problem is when you constantly call hot routes because the damn EA AI is crap and you know the slant is open a lot.

Guys that run no huddle are the same guys that beat the CPU 135-0 and bitch when you run the ball 67% of the time like your team is built to do.

It's a game but reference one of my previous posts about you get what you want out of it. Not saying you are wrong but I wouldn't want that in my OD.

Actually, I was reading a SmartFootball article several weeks ago that broke down the Manning/Moore offense in Indianapolis. It's a playbook with a very small number of plays, and All Verts was one of the staple plays that they ran with great frequency.

Mimicking real-life playcalling isn't really what playing "sim" is all about though. It's about limiting the number of times you run plays that exploit the limitations of the video game so that you get more realistic results when you play. At least that's my view on it.

The problem with press alot is that it hasnt yet been fine tuned.
Very mediocre DB's are successfully jamming awesome WR's
95% of the time. Then they sit in their back pocket when the play
Breaks down and cant get open... Needs fixing.

I honestly think some of you guys have the wrong idea about how I play. I don't know how else I can explain it, but I don't feel like how I play is unrealistic.

I just spread the defense out so it is more likely to tip its hand in regards to what coverage it's using, then audible to something more likely to work against what I think their defense is. That is how real football works.

I'd rather be doing this out of the shotgun and using plays like the read option, speed option and QB power, but none of those work particularly well on a regular basis. (Certain read options work well against the computer, but when playing a person they don't work nearly as well.)

I've always thought the jamming works a little too well, but I do think that when the WR gets by the jam they are open a lot, aren't they? Gotta say, though, I haven't paid a lot of attention to the ratings of my CBs.

On that note, does anyone else remember the "match up stick" from like 5 years back? I always wished they'd bring that back. For those that don't remember, in pre-snap, it let you do a quick comparison of all the players so you could quickly figure out if your WRs were better than their CBs, etc.

FWIW, everything I know about Xs and Os comes from Smart Football and Ross Fulton, currently of Eleven Warriors. Both of those guys write great stuff. I actually learned how to read the "stick" play by reading this article. :-P

Yup and this year the game removed the hitch/stutter when a WR catches a pass, meaning it's probably a TD unless the receiver is Junior Hemingway.

Against 2 man.. unless your safeties go full retard you wont get shit
Open on a go.
on a failed press on the outside WR an immediate pass is wide open for a second or two, assuming there is an intermediate route for the safety to consider as well.

Sadly this occurs less then a handfull of times a game. Usually
10-20 yards tops. Decent passes permitting. Not enough to deter
Serious a gap pressure cheesers.

Ive gotten pretty good at back shoulder timing though. Helps counter
The blitz quite well.

I don't see any FACTS. HAHA! I guess I stand corrected and this makes me hate Manning even more. :)

You are correct on "sim" style of play. Guys running no-huddle because it destroys the defense stamina and gets your DL offsides is cheesing. I guess I would have to play OmahaBeef to make an accurate assessment.

I am not getting 2013 until they have patches and people give it a good review. I popped in 2012 again for a football fix and started a tOSU dynasty with heavily adjusted conferences. Akron and Toledo gave me fits at times but the bend don't break defense did its magic. I am sick of the AI being so bad even with heavy adjustment on sliders.
