NCAA Bans Use of Indian Mascots

On the topic of name changes, hats off to Hawaii for getting rid of "rainbow" in "Rainbow Warriors" (Mili, you probably know something about the reason for this name being a Hawaiian and all - is there a story?)

Overheard in Michigan Locker room circa 1997:
"Hey, we gotta go to paradise and play the Rainbow Warriors"
"Really? Man. I'm scared. You think we can match up?"
"Sure, same story as always, if Coach Hermann calls for a Cover 2 zone, we man up. If he calls prevent, we go all out blitz...."

OK, I made that up. Michigan didn't really play Hawaii. The rest is true.

NCAA Bans Use of Indian Mascots

Well.. there goes our plan to subversively get Michigan to change there mascot to Tibor.

I was however looking forward to the Dot Head Helmet Replacing the Wings and them renaming their defense, "The Untouchables."

Hey, at least for once thier cow cheerleaders would get worshipped.

Damn. Fucking NCAA.

They wanted a gender neutral name. All the Syracuse alums are up in arms about it.
why not just sue the school for misuse of a negative connotation in reference to a race of people that may or may not exist somewhere in the cosmos? when they win, the money they get from the school can be placed into an account to be presented to said "orange persons" upon their discovery. clearly the term "orange person" is just as negative as "red person". they should be forced to change their names from orange <ANYTHING>to "insert place of origin here", as we do not yet know what that place is, <INSERT here origin of place>American. clearly this is the only resolution for this grievous and heinous error commited by this once prestigous institution. it sickens me to see our young people forced to endure blatant... something ism. probably raceism assuming orange persons exist.

so in closing. i hereby DEMAND that syracuse change their names to the "insert place of origin here Americans".

Miami (OH) was right to change their name. Redskins is just a dumb name and an insult on top of it.

I never understood why the Redskins of Washington have an Indian on their helmet. Shouldn't they have a cowboy with a scalp in his hands?

Actually, Michigan did play at Hawaii in 1998, winning 48-17.

June Jones wanted the term "Rainbow" dropped in order to make the team sound more like a football team. The also re-did their uniforms to a darker green with black, eliminating the rainbow logo and coloring. Of course, all the homos here had their panties in a knot about it...

So do you think once Jones is gone they will go back to their old uniforms. Kinda like Indiana did when Randell-El left. I never understood that. That
Indiana went and changed their uniforms for about 3 or 4 years and now they went back to the old symbol

A lot of folks still call them "The Bows" and many fans still chant, "Go Bows!" at the games. Still, I doubt they'll change back because their new unis look slick and they're really taken a liking to the new logo:

over the old one:

Speaking of the homos getting all up in arms about dropping "rainbow" from the name and the rainbow logo, read this shit...

The logo change upset the homo community? :slappy:

I hadn't heard that.

IU simply corrected an error. I never understood why a school whose colors are crimson and cream went to red and black, with a different logo, for football season. It looked like a cheap ploy to sell merchandise to me.

Now they look like Indiana again, and they suck. Things are back to normal.

I agree with BKB; how long will it be before some Irish wimp objects to the term "Fighting Irish" because it's an ethnic stereotype? And of course, how long until someone objects to the Ole Miss "Rebels" and their mascot?

Edit: I guess they eliminated this mascot two years ago but there was a controversy about it and they currently have no mascot at all. I'm sure the NCAA thinks that's just perfect. No mascot, no school spirit, no fun. Oh well, at least we still have Brutus, for now.
