Ridiculous attempt by the NCAA to expand their sphere of influence, in my opinion. It's a bit of a reach to make a case for the mascot chosen by an institution of higher learning (or even scUM) having any real impact on the welfare of the student-athlete.

I don't get the whole mentality.

You choose a mascot and moniker for your team because you are proud of your team, right? so whatever you choose is something you would be proud to be. It can't possibly be seen as anything but a compliment and a positive thing that someone would choose to name their team after you or your people.
The Fighting Irish? By God, they are proud of their Irish-Catholic heritage. How is that a negative reflection on the Irish people?
FSU Seminoles? That is a compliment to the Seminole tribe of southern Florida, not a disparagement.
This PC thought crime crap has been way overboard for years now, but it seems to only be getting worse. If a certain group is offended by a team's mascot, then they don't understand the whole philosophy of sports at all. they are of the "competition is bad" and "self esteem for all" crowd that don't appreciate what competition and "winners" have done for them throughout history.

this is getting WAY out of hand. why not just ban mascots all together? all mascots have the potential to upset someone. there is probably a white guy out there somewhere who doesn't like the idea of cowboys as a mascot. and the nature freaks probably don't like animals or plants being used as mascots. hell, why not just forbid anyone or anything to have any name what-so-ever so we can keep from "hurting peoples feelings".

just remember, it is your right as a human being to force the world to conform to your wishes because if it doesn't it might "offend" you.

Well, I can explain it to you this way: back in 1991, some Native American wanted to get this name in the paper. So, he protested the Atlanta Braves in the World Series & spread the notion that these names "must be offensive to Native Americans," even though these offensive names haven't been offensive (some) for over 100 years.

Using a caricature of a Native American (or anybody) in poor taste is wrong. But these mascots & logos aren't done in poor taste. Is the ND logo offensive or derrogatory to Irish people? Is Brutus offensive to Buckeyes? Is the Toledo Rocket offensive to Dildos? Is the USC Trojan offensive to condoms?? Hell no ..

How is describing the Native American population as "Braves," or "Warriors" offensive? Those words are meant to imply courage, heart, etc.

Too funny... actually listened to an entire radio show dedicated to debating whether having no mascot whatsoever for Marquette would be a ground-breaking, trend-setting move or just unbelievably lame. It was awful... and pretty darn funny. :biggrin:

I really like the Fighting Carrots idea... I hope it catches on somewhere.

The Seminoles are a perfect example. Don't they have Seminole leaders working with the college to honor their tribe? They should just let each college deal with it when the pressure applies. Just like how St. Johns bowed to pressure and changes to the RedStorm and how the wussies over at Fiami (Oh) changed to the RedHawks and their mascot to that ugly bird.

Leave it to the colleges and the community they belong to. Freaking NCAA

They wanted a gender neutral name. All the Syracuse alums are up in arms about it.

The Orangemen I would presume refers to the English protestants who ruled/rule much of Ireland and helped make the Irish Fighting. The Orange marching societies still form up and march through Londonderry and other parts of Ireland to remind the Irish of their loss at the Battle of the Boyne on March 12th. That is the day which commemorates the victory of Protestant Prince William of Orange over Catholic King James II in 1690
