NBA Discussion (Official Thread)

So after all of the :panic: we end up with the top seed in the West vs the top seed in the East in the Finals. Both teams are currently 0-0.

It's hard to beat GS when guys like Thompson are shooting lights-out like he was the past couple of games, and on top of that, Curry seems to be rounding back into form. However, OKC's stupid/timid play allowed GS to dictate the way those last three games went. They looked totally resigned to their fate in the third quarter last night and GS chewed them up. That series ended Saturday night when they couldn't close them out at home. Game 7 was simply a formality.

I don't see Durant or Westbrook as championship players. They can both log silly statistics when the pressure is low, but as we saw over the last three games, neither is a pressure player. Westbrook goes into "hero-ball" mode, and he's not nearly efficient enough for that to be effective. His shooting % over the last three games was horrific. And Durant looked downright afraid during the first half in game seven. He didn't attempt to take things into his own hands until it was too late last night. It's hard to say letting a player like Durant go is best for a team, but this series proved that okc, as currently constructed, is not a championship team.

I could see an argument made that this could help the Cavs. He's one flagrant away from getting an auto suspension (not sure if technical is included in the 4 point system). So if he gets one in a closeout game vs okc, or a game against the Cavs, he'll miss a game vs the Cavs. Additionally, he is a dirty player. He could have to alter his playing style ever so slightly, and/or have the thought of getting a flagrant on his mind at all times, leaving him to play slightly softer than he otherwise would.
I don't think the Cavs win the series, but if they do...nailed it.

So, NBA silly season is getting ready to kickoff. That time of year where desperate teams pay tens of millions of dollars to back up forwards and centers to play 12 minutes a game. It's a pretty loaded market, with a top-5 player in Kevin Durant in it. Some of the big names and some mentioned possible/likely suitors (I'm leaving LBJ off, because he's apparently stated his intention to return to defend the title):

Kevin Durant, SF (OKC)-- Thunder, Warriors, Clippers, Lakers, Wizards, Knicks...hell, almost everybody.
Al Horford, PF (ATL)-- Celtics, Heat, Knicks
Mike Conley, PG (MEM) -- Grizzlies, Knicks
Andre Drummond, C (DET, Restricted)-- Pistons, Knicks, Lakers, Bulls
DeMar DeRozan, SG (TOR)-- Lakers, Raptors, Bulls
Dwight Howard, C (HOU)-- Mavericks, Knicks, Warriors
Hassan Whiteside, C (MIA)-- Heat, Lakers, Bulls
Chandler Parsons, SF (DAL)-- Mavericks, Nets
Bradley Beal, SG (WAS)-- Wizards, Knicks
Nic Batum, F (CHA)-- Hornets, Warriors
Dirk Nowitski, PF (DAL)-- Mavericks, Warriors
Dwyane Wade, SG (MIA)-- Heat, Cavaliers
Harrison Barnes, SF (GS, Restricted)-- Warriors, Pacers
Rajon Rondo, PG (SAC)-- Kings, Rockets
Bismack Biyombo, C (TOR)-- Raptors, Rockets, Bulls

It will be interesting to see what the Cavs do with Kevin Love. That's gonna be a big wildcard. Yes, he forever earned a place in Cleveland lore with his defensive effort in the waning seconds of Game 7, but this is a guy that was effectively "benched" earlier in the series, and who, all-in-all, has been a rather large disappointment in Cleveland. However, some franchises will look at the numbers he put up in Minnesota and see a guy that can be an offensive focal point vs. a glorified role player in Cleveland.
