It wasn't until later that I realized that I'd been making such a stupid assumption, and that it was so ingrained that I'd even foolishly applied it to someone I knew for an absolute fact didn't fit it. Just stupid.

So.....you're saying you were racist against jocks?

:wink:

Then why would I be kidding myself about not saying something about the group of muslims that were praying on the airplane?

OK, here's a scenario for you. Say you are an Air Marshall on an airplane flying out of JFK to LAX, you see a group of Middle Eastern looking individuals a few rows up from you, they are all talking quietly amongst each other and them begin praying aloud. Do you keep a particular eye on them?

If I am a air marshal yes....but it is my job as an air marshal to keep an eye on eyeryone so not sure why it would be relevant since it would be part of my job to keep an eye and them and every other person on the plane.

But if you saw a group of nuns praying, you would keep a particular eye on them as well? Notice the word "particular" there and in my last post.

Pretty lousy example... that's like asking if you're worried about Ghandi picking a fight with you on a subway.

Do you keep an eye on black kids when driving on a run-down sidestreet in a big city? How about white kids in a run-down country town?

Yikes, this thread has gone all over the place. So much for trying to fit things into the flow of conversation... this is the part I want to discuss... so I'll just toss it in here.

Check my math, please.

Black = hip/hop = basketball Hip/hop = crime = gangsters Hoods = athletically gifted = rappers = gangsters I want to make sure I have this right...

Hoods = athletically gifted = Black = hip/hop = rappers = gangsters = crime = basketball

Therefore, the NBA is full of thugs and wannabe gangsters.

Iam, are you really, really sure you stand behind "your take" here? I know two NBA players who don't fit this stereotype, but it is just as ridiculous to generalize based on them, or I'd assume every NBA player lived in a quiet house in the mountains and liked to host dinner parties with their wives and sing Christmas songs to large groups.

Assigning attributes to groups based on the actions or reputation of an individual here and there isn't all that logically sound in the first place. But to generalize so broadly requires mixing in assumptions and underlying perceptions... that's where it's worth stopping to think about those perceptions.

It's tough to get around assumptions you don't know you have. I prided myself on having friends in many groups in high school and college - the band members, cheerleaders, drama, academic clubs, etc. Wouldn't ever date a "jock," though. Someone tried to set me up with a football player in college - someone who happened to have gone to my high school, though she didn't know that. I turned him down; just didn't have much interest in people who were so interested in the physical that they didn't care to develop themselves spiritually or mentally. It wasn't until later that I realized that I'd been making such a stupid assumption, and that it was so ingrained that I'd even foolishly applied it to someone I knew for an absolute fact didn't fit it. Just stupid.

I'd like to see less defensiveness in these types of discussions and more self-examination. Constantly reevaluation our viewpoints is how we grow.

Since we are bumping..I figured this wonderful post was worthy.

Good God, you just won't quit will you Grad. Give me one example of a racist comment I made.

When did I ever call you a racist? If we are not reading between the lines of your posts, you should not read between the lines of mine.

He apparently thought that the last part of your post #241 was directed at him, despite the fact that your joking insult was directed to me by name.

If you'd read my posts, instead of just throwing cheap insults my way, you wouldn't have to read between any lines to realize that. :biggrin:

he just discussed the culture thing in a round about way. said some of the stuff weve mentioned here is there, but he thought it was that outside of the 15 year jordan/magic/bird era it has been a secondary sport. used attendances to state how pre that era they couldnt draw league wide, tv ratings were second tier. went on to just say the only nba city is la, the only primary nba city with its "team" was the lakers. he mentioned the suns come a close second in that regard.

all and all pretty interesting, and i thought of this thread...
