I don't think you can honestly say that if you were on that plane with your family you would be thinking that. You are kidding yourself.
Where in what I said here did I say "everyone is a racist"? Do we have to do this all again today? I still believe you would be kidding yourself if you were in that situation thinking that.

And I would like to know why would I be kidding myself if I wasn't thinking that I should say something?

Yikes, this thread has gone all over the place. So much for trying to fit things into the flow of conversation... this is the part I want to discuss... so I'll just toss it in here.

Check my math, please.

you're completely right, i forgot that Jason Williams is black. Face it, the black hip/hop community and basketball go hand and hand, and thats not a racists comment, its fact.
Black = hip/hop = basketball

Its also a fact that crime and the gangster lifestyle go hand and hand with the hip/hop world.
Hip/hop = crime = gangsters

You get kids from the hoods that are athletically gifted, and they want to be the superstar rappers the same rappers that are ACTING like they are gangsters.
Hoods = athletically gifted = rappers = gangsters

Call me a racists if you will but thats just my take.
I want to make sure I have this right...

Hoods = athletically gifted = Black = hip/hop = rappers = gangsters = crime = basketball

Therefore, the NBA is full of thugs and wannabe gangsters.

Iam, are you really, really sure you stand behind "your take" here? I know two NBA players who don't fit this stereotype, but it is just as ridiculous to generalize based on them, or I'd assume every NBA player lived in a quiet house in the mountains and liked to host dinner parties with their wives and sing Christmas songs to large groups.

Assigning attributes to groups based on the actions or reputation of an individual here and there isn't all that logically sound in the first place. But to generalize so broadly requires mixing in assumptions and underlying perceptions... that's where it's worth stopping to think about those perceptions.

It's tough to get around assumptions you don't know you have. I prided myself on having friends in many groups in high school and college - the band members, cheerleaders, drama, academic clubs, etc. Wouldn't ever date a "jock," though. Someone tried to set me up with a football player in college - someone who happened to have gone to my high school, though she didn't know that. I turned him down; just didn't have much interest in people who were so interested in the physical that they didn't care to develop themselves spiritually or mentally. It wasn't until later that I realized that I'd been making such a stupid assumption, and that it was so ingrained that I'd even foolishly applied it to someone I knew for an absolute fact didn't fit it. Just stupid.

I'd like to see less defensiveness in these types of discussions and more self-examination. Constantly reevaluation our viewpoints is how we grow.
