I almost never post in these threads but I'll make an exception once. I really liked what I saw today. I saw a young football team playing good fundamental football against a very good and rather unconventional team. While Ohio State did have a couple of big plays this win could not be chalked up to it. Most of the turnovers wheren't Navy giving up the ball so much as Ohio State taking the ball. I liked the the running backs they seemed to push hard for the extra couple of yards and made good decisions. There weren't lots of stupid flags. There looked like there was a lot of discipline on the field. I remember a team a while back that just barely squeeked by a lot of "lesser" teams playing a similar type of football. Things turned out pretty good for them.

I'm not nearly as football-savvy (at all) as some/a lot of members on this board, but some minor points:
- In general we dominated the game. How many of us were nervous at halftime? How many of us thought we were doing poorly/screwed next week against USC/etc?

- If Tressel was only concerned about winning the game, he would have kicked the FG instead of going for it on 4th and 2. Had he gone for it and still cared only about winning, he would have run a different play. He used the opportunity to say to his OLine, "let's see what you can do". We saw what they could do, and it makes me nervous going into next week. Going into this game, I was nervous about the tackles but confident in the interior line (the 3 B's). I'm not as confident now... We should be able to move the pile at will.

- It's really, really hard to make plays when they're cut blocking you.

-We forced turnovers.

- Spitler didn't look great. Looked kinda slow when he was chasing the QB, but I don't know how fast Navy's QB is.

- I'd like to see Hines get the start against USC. No offense to Russel at all, but, well, I just think it would be better. I'd be more confident with that by far, although I'm still a little worried about Hines' having grasped the mental aspects of the game 100%.

-Fuck scUM.

-Pryor looked GOOD. Not amazing, but much, much improved from last year. The key to our offense next week will be Pryor, and his play should give us confidence going into next week.

- Saine looked great. Herron not spectacular, but still pretty solid. I'm still worried about their ability to run against USC, mostly because of our line.

- We threw to TE's... But the playbook was still closed. It will be a LOT easier for us to move the ball up the middle when they're always worried about Pryor going to the outside.

- Overall, it wasn't as bad as it looked. I wish we had won by more to give us more confidence. Mentally, I want us to be pumped going against USC. As bad as that game looked at time, we're still going to be going up against a TRUE FRESHMAN, IN the shoe! In his first start in a hostile stadium, with a stud defensive line.

The problem is that this O line and this offense are going to hear all week long about how they suck and how USC is going to come in and dismantle them. These guys listen to that shit and at some point that doubt has to creep in. Brewster verified this when he talked about the O line wanting to play well to take some heat off Bollman (which they did not today, by the way).

I worry about that doubt with a game against USC looming.

OK I got back from the game, showered and cooled off before posting on here (so jwinslow doesn't yank my pants down and give me a hard spanking :biggrin:)

1. How did the ref miss that FARKING FACE MASK? Aliens on Mars saw that!

2. The D scared me. Hopefully next week they'll do better. And if Tress was "keeping the cards close to his vest," next week will be different. If we just underperformed, well then...

3. What does it take to please some fans? If we win easy, they complain we're just beating cupcakes and not getting any challenge and not learning to "come back from behind." If we have a challenging game, they ask for Tressel's head on a plate. WTF????

4. Hopefully this game gives the coaches and players a realistic assessment of what they have and haven't accomplished on the road to the USC game. We had lots of lessons to learn from today.

5. We are starting to hear the same old ballad about Tress and play-calling.

6. GO BUCKS! BEAT USC!!!

Personally, I thought Saine looked better running the ball today than Boom. He seemed to get up in the hole and never quit...it always took several hits before he went down. I thought it was encouraging to see him running hard out there since last season he looked very tentative. That could be a sign of good things to come.

I was also very encouraged by the zip TP had on the ball, especially when he rolled out. He made some really nice throws today. Would've liked to have seen him throw the deep ball though. And like some others mentioned, I would've loved a naked bootleg call on the 4th down play. No way a Navy guy beats him to the corner there.

Also, nice game by Little Carter...he had a few nice catches and really looked confident out there. On the flip side, I hope TWash picks himself up by the bootstraps and turns it on next week. He looked down on himself running back to the huddle after the second miss. Lots more balls to be caught young man...keep your head up.

If? If my ass. Those were excellent plays made by tOSU. Great defense not dumb mistakes by the offense.

My thing is this: If you want to show Navy repsect, treat them like a real opponent next time. I'll probably get drilled for this by somebody... I appreciate the service those guys give to our country, but on this particular Saturday the weren't defending our country they were a bunch of guy lining up and trying to beat my Buckeyes. I'd prefer instead of rolling out the red carpet that they not leave points on the field, put the game away when they have the ball up two scores, not put in the backup QB with the game still in question, and use a little more of the playbook.

I understand the point about not wanting to put stuff on film for USC next week, but are a few more screen passes to negate the blitz too much to ask for? It's not as if Pete Carroll has never seen a screen before.

As they showed, Navy is a team fully capable of beating the Buckeyes. Treat them like it next time.

Thoughts from the Left Coast.....

Played Tress ball. Didn't want to rub it in Navy's face, that's why went for it on fourth and one. Oh well. Maybe now Tress will go for the jugular, and kick the team while they are down. Just to make sure they don't come back. Glad to see our future naval officers don't quit, but fight until the bitter end - that's what I like in someone protecting our shores.

O-line didn't look great, but kinda surprised at the D-line not holding the Navy guys at bay. Too many yards, and that qb run to paydirt went right up the middle. Nothing should make that happen. D=tackle, MLB, and free safety weren't at home.

If the CB's play like that next week, and the Dline plays like they did today, Barkley, (or my grandmother), will destroy OSU. Please, no one try the 'Tress kept the playbook closed today' alibi, as I saw some good stuff from the offense (someone already noted the several tight end tosses), and an end around or two. So I think that the playbook was open, and let's try some things. Anyone think that Bauserman did a pretty fair Pryor imitation on the qb draw? Navy did, I'm sure.

Oh well, as the ex-Notre Dame sage said, "A win is a win". Mark May is still an idiot, but that's his role. I nominate him for an emmy, as he plays it so well. Next on the chopping block, USC. PS, they weren't looking all that great against San Jose State last I looked.

I have no qualms about Tressel going for it on 4th down... all these years we've wanted him to be more aggressive and I agree with his decision.

I question the play call though, why take it out of Pryor's hands? Just have him get behind Boren and Brewster and let him use his 6'6 frame to get the first.

Yeah I think we didn't want to rub it in their face, it almost cost us a game but a win is a win no matter how ugly it is the win is sweeter to me.
