Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

OSU did very well in the first half and Pryor looked to be starting a very good day. I'm not sure if they just got overconfident, but the whole team mishandled the second half. There are plenty of positives and negatives to take away from this game.

A few Big Ten random thoughts.

Ohio State squeaks home against Navy.

Iowa wins by 1 over Northern Iowa.

Minny 3 behind Syracuse with Paulus at QB with 5:00 to play?

Expect a major "Big Ten is weak" [censored] storm to continue.

LOL not so fast N. Iowa may be getting the ball back.

I'm sorry, but it seems ignorant to me to say that Barkley is smiling. The Bucks will get after him early often, you can guess that by the way they got to Navy's QB every time he threw it. Sure he got some off, but he still was under crazy pressure nearly every time.

The D will probably have a heyday with a true frosh QB. If I'm Brakley, I'm wincing at some of the shots laid to the QB today, because thats me next week.

Congrats to Navy..they were well coached and executed their plan at their level. Though it seems that since tOSU started scheduling UT,Usc. etc., the team and fans have trouble getting excited about the rest of the ooc schedule. I think it hurts the teams preparation for the whole year. The game next week has to much importance to it for the 2nd game. You want to play your best game next week and especially with a young team I think its iiimpossible. Defenses and OL's need to build unity and trust in the unit and this young defense and a line with only Brewster coming back in last years spot the OL was not in sync and did a poor job reacting to Navy's zone blitzes. The defense seemed out of position a lot. The Buckeys won this game with great individual talent, not scheme or team play. I don't know if there is time to do it all in one week..its possible USC will have similar issues because of all the new starters they have.....Can PC have his team better prepared than tOSU next week???Pryor has to be theIT factor in the game. Go Bucks

Expect a major "Big Ten is weak" shit storm to continue.

And I can't argue with it anymore. The Big Ten is weak right now. I know these things are somewhat cyclical, but I'm ready for the cycle to run its course.

We looked very average at times in this game. Is Navy better than billed or are we worse than billed? Or is neither question relevant?

Flat is the word I would use at this point - especially in the 2nd half.

I think that Ohio State has been planning for USC. We manhandled Navy after their first drive. The second half started with them pinned at their own goal line.

If true, I see that as inexcusable. With essentially a brand new team on defense and a lot of younger players throughout the roster, worry about the game immediately in front of you first.

They executed well in every facet of the game, playing much "bigger" than their physical size would suggest. We grew complacent and some of our players may have started to look ahead to USC.

I'd hate to be Ntre Ame at this point.

I thought this game would be close but it was way too close for my liking. Line play worried me. Our defensive secondary made some bad choices. There will be a lot of coaching work this week.

BUT Kurt Coleman is a stud. And Jermaile Hines.

On the other hand, we didn't really open our playbook. There are lots of wrinkles to show next week. USC is coming in with an unexperienced QB. I am less confident in a win next week than I was at halftime but I still think we get one.

I don't care about how wide open the offense was, but I WAS hoping for what they ran to be crisp and efficient. I can't say that more than a handful of plays were even run with what looked to be confidence. There appeared to be an offensive-unit-wide tentative streak for some reason.

Just my thoughts....

My observations...

Pryor looks much better than last year. I was one of the people questioning his passing and footwork. He was much improved this game. I did not see many, if any, underthrown balls. I did not see receivers have to slow down to catch balls turning the catch into a jump ball situation.

The offense line was a little better than last year. Of course, a little better than bad is not going to cut it. There were not big holes for our running backs to run through. Our running backs need big holes to run through.

Are you a new football fan? You cannot see the difference between the Navy O-line and the USC O-line?

USC will be able to protect their frosh QB with their run game. Barkley will have a tough time, but he's not going to be shaking in his cleats.

Derek2k3 -

Navy drove the ball 99 yards for a TD against the #6 ranked team in front of 105,000 fans...how is that a fluke play or luck?

Well, in my post I said, "Without a couple big breaks." Which includes a 99 yard drive. And dont forget, there were a few plays that we nearly stopped them on that drive. I don't mean to take away from how great that drive was for Navy, but notice Navy did that once. They had 2 good drives all day.

But if it makes you feel better to write stupid stuff, then ok...

Oh yeah, I know USC has a great line, I think 4 returning starters? I'm not 100% sure about that...but, the D line looked good to me. Of course, this is all Academic until next week :)

Lots of changes on the Buckeye offense and defense this year. We didn't start with a lower-tier opponent or a MAC team. This Navy team is good and we got tested.

There are a few other positives to take away from this game:

We got tested. We don't enter next week thinking we walk on water.

We won. Tested, perhaps even rattled, we stopped them from tying the game.

We played extremely well at times on both sides of the ball and on special teams.

We and USC are well enough coached to know we can play better next week. Our guys will be taking a bit of strain in the locker room right now but, it's a win.

And, a win is a good thing.
