Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

As if another year of experience isn't enough? Try looking at any film from Boren's time at UM and then compare it to any Rehring film you care to view?

I originally said 31-17 but I am not sure we will put up that many points. We have been far from stellar in our openings the past couple of years vs equal or lesser compretition.... Plus I have not seen anything to make me believe our O-Line is going to be better then it was last year....

20-14 Go Bucks!

Potential is there for Boren to be really good I agree but I have not seen him in the OSU system tosay he is better then what we had before. I hear great things but those things have all been about his nastiness, not oh wow he sure can move a pile, or man is pass pro his feet and hands are incredible.

He could be all those things but for a person playing guard there sure is a lot of optimism across the O-Line that I personally do not see.

Regardless, my score shows it being close but I do not think the game will ever be in doubt but too close for comfort and the nay-sayers will be in full force on Saturday I think.

Edit.. Forgot this part

"As if another year of experience isn't enough?"

Lets look at that
LT - Brand New
LG - New Player (with high potential)
C - Yep experience will help Brewster
RG - Has playing time but playing a new position so can you count on that leap
RT - Playing a new position and I think we know what we are going to get with Cordle and experience leap will not be seen here as much as you may think.

I am hoping this is not coming off negative because in my heart and hopes man I hope the team and O-Line is ten fold better then what we have seen the past couple of years but the way I break it down I think I am taming my expectations until I see otherwise.

I'll grant you the brand new LT but New Player doesn't account for Boren very successful game experience and in this conference no less.. Browning has played inside and is clearly going to be better there than he was outside.. I think a 5th year guy playing where an out of place sophomore did a years ago is reason enough to expect a pretty impressive improvement? my opinion..

Tressel's Thursday update

Some quick highlights from our final access to coach Jim Tressel before the game Saturday:

-- Said DE Cameron Heyward, coming off a sprained ankle, looks fine and has not missed any practice time.

-- Added reserve safety Aaron Gant to the list of players who may miss the game because of injury (others are Ohrian Johnson, Travis Howard, Jermil Martin) ....also Mike Adams (reported suspension).

-- Confirmed that both freshman RBs, Jordan Hall and Jaamal Berry, should play.

-- Said the plan was to get backup QB Joe Bauserman in, somewhere in the third-fourth-fifth series of the game range. This has been the typical M.O. for an OSU opener in recent years. Typically, the backup gets a series early, then comes back in if the game gets well in hand in the second half.

Just settling into positions will be the key to us winning and what determines the score. I don't think Navy is your usual first game team. I think they are a good team and will give us problems for a while and it's not going to be a runaway.
Navy specializes in their offense and we haven't played a team that runs the triple.
We pull away in the 2nd quarter 31-10.

Recent Rittenberg (hold the boos) blog post on Essspin.

Buckeyes are younger but more prepared
September 3, 2009 4:03 PM

Posted by ESPN.com's Adam Rittenberg

The most significant number during Ohio State's preseason wasn't 2 (Terrelle Pryor's jersey), 3 (consecutive BCS bowl losses), 4 (consecutive Big Ten titles) or 5 (consecutive wins against Michigan).

It was 37.

"We had 37 guys that are new to the team," senior safety and co-captain Kurt Coleman said. "There's a lot of things that we didn't know what to expect heading into camp, but during camp, we definitely jelled and we've gone after it. The younger guys are definitely ready to step up and make big plays."

Ohio State lost 12 starters from last year's team, including national award winners like linebacker James Laurinaitis and cornerback Malcolm Jenkins, as well as offensive skill threats like Chris "Beanie" Wells and Brian Robiskie. Head coach Jim Tressel's Week 1 depth chart features 21 freshmen or sophomores in starting or backup roles.

Several true freshmen could see the field in Saturday's season opener against Navy (ESPN, noon ET), including wide receiver Duron Carter, fullbacks Zach Boren and Adam Homan, and offensive linemen Jack Mewhort and Corey Linsley. ...
