Game Thread Navy 27, at tOSU 31 (Sep 5th, ESPN)

Vico at ohd.com takes a look at the last meeting in the '81 Liberty Bowl.

...The Buckeyes drew the Navy Midshipmen, a 14 point underdog in this game. Accordingly, since the Midshipmen were thought to be a bit of a pushover for the Buckeyes, and since this was Art Schlichter?s last go-around in a Buckeye uniform, the game plan seemed to call for an aerial assault. If it was supposed to be an easy send-off for Schlichter, his performance this game didn?t suggest it. The first play of the game was a hail mary to split end Gary Williams, one of the better split ends in the country, but fell innocently to the ground. All game, Schlichter seemed to be forcing throws to players that just weren?t open. Later, when the Buckeyes found themselves in a dog fight with a 14 point underdog, the Buckeyes readjusted to give Jimmy Gayle and Tim Spencer touches, using players like John Frank or Cedric Anderson as safety valves. All in all, it was a disappointing finale for Schlichter5. He finished the game 11/26 for 159 yards, 2 TDs and an interception and was clearly outplayed by his counterpart for the Middies. Marco Pagnanelli, who had only one passing TD all season finished the game 14/27 for 201 yards, 2 TDs and an interception (a costly one at that too)...

Leaving in about 45 minutes to the airport to fly out to Columbus for the game this Saturday. Arrive at about 10 p.m. this evening. After 40+ years as a Buckeye fan, this is my first time at The Shoe. I'll be visiting the campus on Thursday (also my first time) and I'm almost as excited to see it as I am the game.

Getting pumped!!

GO BUCKS!!

i hope, and believe, that tress and the team are more concentrated than we have seemed to let on. i mean this game is this week right?

How often in the Jim Tressel era has a Buckeye team lost a home game to team they had no business losing to? I think they will be just fine.

For those going to be going to the game there will be a fly over with 4 Navy Jets 30 min prior to kickoff. So get there early.

Just out of curiosity.....Where will these navy planes come from? Do we have a carrier in Lake Erie!?

Do services "share" bases for things such as this?

Either way. Very cool.

I heard they are not real planes bust just very small minatures that are shot from one end of the stadium over to the other with compressed air and that gives them the appearance of real planes. It's a Cleveland thing, trying to make something good out of crap.

They can take off and land from any good sized airport, Port Columbus, Cleveland, Wright Pat. For that matter, they could easily fly in from NAS Norfolk, which would only be about an hour away or so, flight time, no big deal at all. If they have drop tanks when they fly over, you can bet they came from Norfolk, I'm not sure that the -18 can do the 900 mile or so round trip it would be on internal tanks, they are not known for their range.

They likely won't have drop tanks over populated areas. If they came from an NAS that far away to where they needed extra fuel, they'd either aerial refuel along the way or top off at a nearby military base.
