National Chaampionship Hopes

Who do we root for? ND or USC? Kind of like ND vs scUM? I tend to think ND because I think their novelty will wear off and someone will knock them off in addition to USC. Maybe even this weekend. scUM is not that good which helps us out. Still going to be tough up there.

IF MSU and Purdue beat ND, you root for ND. If only one of them beats ND you root for a zero - zero tie and 22 broken legs...evenly distributed. If ND is undefeated you root like hell for USC because we need help to go anywhere with them in the same region.

The Florida/SEC teams will compete for the best spots close to home unless it's a chance for #1, they won't want to leave their fan base.

In '02 we were ranked 12th after 2 games. You tell me if it is possible?
1. We were still undefeated in week 2 of 2002;

2. Most people were convinced that the Bucks wouldn't make the NC game in 2002, since there were still several other undefeated teams ahead of the Bucks in the polls toward the end of the season (namely, Oklahoma, Georgia, Virginia Tech, and of course Miami). Fortunately, most of those teams lost, leaving the Bucks and Miami as the only two undefeated teams. But, we had to wait until mid-November to move into the number 2 slot in the polls. I can't understand the optimism now in contrast to the pessimism then.

3. That being said, the Bucks still have a chance, but let's not get so carried away - it's still only week 2, and lots can happen before the regular season ends.

Add Notre Dame to your list... They were 9 - 0 I think and rated around 4 when they lost and then the wheels feel off.

It's crazy to think we can't get to Pasadena this year... it's only the third week of the season, we're not as far back as we've been in the past, a lot of the teams in front of us play each other and all of them have significant obstacles to running the table:

FSU - @BC, @Va., NC State, @Clemson, @Fla.
Georgia - @MSU, @Fla, Auburn, @Ga. Tech, SEC*
Florida - @Alabama, @Ky., @S.C., FSU, Ga., SEC*
Tenn - @Fla, @LSU, Ga, @Ala, S.C., @ND, SEC*
Va.Tech - @W.Va., @Maryland, BC, Miami, @Va.
LSU - Tenn, @MSU, Fla, Auburn, @Ala, SEC*
Texas - @Missouri, Okla, @Ok State, @A&M, BIG 12*
USC - @Oregon, @ASU, @ND, @Cal, UCLA

Nobody can say with authority it's not possible for anybody ahead of us to lose two games or have a bad loss late. In 2003 we lost to Wisky and still had a chance to play for the NC if we had beaten Michigan on the road. If and when we get that second loss, any talk about being out of the NC hunt would be legitimate. Let's get over it and get behind the Bucks.

No Argument here.
My point is that from a ranking standpoint we are sitting about the same. If teams loose in front of us and we win, we still have the chance to make it to the RB.
I never thought that Ok would have lost that year, but they did. Who knows what will happen to Tehas and VT? The only thing consistent in college FB is that teams loose when they are not supposed to.

As the experts say, "If your going to lose, lose early!" A late loss will kill your chances! The teams that play conference championship games are taking a big chance. Also OSU-scUM is just like a championship game. Can't lose that game. It will kill your NC chances.

I can't believe nobody here is worried about ND. I mean, look at the polls...they're only ONE spot below us in the rankings!

And yes, that is sarcasm. I just find it funny that so many here are discussing how LSU or USC are the "media darlings", when (A) the media doesn't determine BCS standings, and (B) Notre Dame is by far the biggest media darling in existence. Consider:

Preseason rankings: Notre Dame #54
Week One: Notre Dame #20
Week Two: Notre Dame #10

I think that myabe the pessimism back then has led to the optimism now. Back then we knew that unless the teams in front of us lost we had no chance to get to the title game. Well one by one the teams lost. This year we're in a similar situation only we have the one loss. However, I think most people are still thinking the same way, i.e. as long as the people in front of us lose then we move up...it happened in 2002 it'll happen again. Hence the optimism.

This was on cfb.com.....Pretty good stuff. Re-iterates what some have been saying.

Don’t Lose Hope…

Speaking of the Buckeyes, fans should not lose faith one just needs to go back to two years ago when USC, LSU, and Oklahoma were all one-loss teams squabbling over which two deserved a spot in the Sugar Bowl. Right now, OSU is the highest ranked one loss team, and if you look at the polls, many of the teams above them should knock each other out. LSU, Florida, Tennessee, and Georgia all play each other, not only making for a exciting SEC East race but also hope for teams below them to leapfrog into the title game. Virginia Tech still has to beat a Georgia Tech squad that came out of Auburn with a W, Boston College, and a Miami (fl) team that should be much improved from their opening game offensive ineptitude against Florida State. As for the Seminoles, they still have to travel to BC, Virginia, Clemson, and Florida, all ranked currently. And as much as it looks like USC and Texas are headed on a collision course for Pasadena right now, we all know how unpredictable a college football season can be. That Notre Dame game no longer looks like a cakewalk for the Trojans, while Texas still must overcome the Sooner monkey on their backs and a Big XII title game. So the moral of the story is that OSU and other teams currently ranked low teens should not lose hope, and instead focus on winning out and hoping for a few breaks along the way.
