Naming Children These Days

The thing that I always tell people when they are having kids, think about THEIR future. Have the best hope and dream that your child is going to be a Supreme Court Justice, Doctor, University President, or CEO. Also teaching in an inner-city gives you some interesting names. I had a student named Shamon, when asked if his parents were big Micheal Jackson fans he told us that it was his dad's name. The best/worst one was a classmate who had a student who pronounced his name ma-ni-JA, but his parents spelled it Myniga. Try reading that on the roster the first day.

Interesting statistic I read a few years back in a study on African American names:

http://www.slate.com/id/2116449/

I was going to mention the Freakonomics chapter. I didn't realize Slate printed it. It's a good read.

That being said, seems like every little girl has the name "Madison" and boys names are increasingly effeminate or those super-annoying last name for first name types that used to be limited to southern dudes who wear pastel shorts in the summer.[/quote]

The number of names like *Gunner, Hunter, Storm & Archer has risen dramatically over the past couple of decade as well so it isn't just 'effeminate' boy names.

*In the interest of full disclosure...my son's name is Gunnar but it comes from his maternal great-grandfather.

Name of a four-year-old (or so - maybe three) who belongs to someone who goes to my wife's church: Man Man. (I don't know the spelling.) That's his first name.

Wasn't there a thread maybe in the recruiting forum about names of recruits? I seem to remember someone named "Incredible" or something goofy. And there was a story of the family who named their kids stuff like "White Power" or crap like that.

I know this name was mentioned already, but a friend worked at the hospital during college (filing paperwork and crap). The rumor he heard was a woman wanted to name her newly-born daughter "Shithead". (Pronounced "shi-THADE") She'd be about 15 or so now.

My wife's name is Robyn. She wanted to name our kid "Batman", but that would make me "Batgirl", so I said no.

My friend works at a health clinic and said a kid that was in today was named Pimptarius.

Parents who name their kids shit like that should have their parental rights taken away.

Weren't their some football prospects a few years back named stupid shit like "Sirdarius" and "Your Highness"? I did thread searches and couldn't find anything...
