My own personal OSU all-time "dream team"

I'm running a 4-3 defense, a Pro I offense and just naming starters(no nickel backs, 3rd down backs, etc) No switching positions and I'm using a blend of college and NFL greatness.

Offense

WR's: Cris Carter and Paul Warfield (2 NFL HOFers)
TE: John Frank

OT: John Hicks and Orlando Pace (wow)
OG: Bill Willis and Jim Parker (NFL HOF x 2)
C: LeCharles Bently (almost as tough as LB to pick one from such a deep pool)

QB: Troy Smith
RB: Archie Griffin (tough to leave 4 other Heisman winners off the list)
FB: Pete Johnson (best mix of blocker and short yardage back)

Defense

DE: Vrabel and Will Smith (tough call over Van DeCree and Brudzinski)
DT: Wilkinson and Jim Stillwagon (easy)

CB: Springs and Winfield (easier)
S: Tatum and Doss (easiest)

LB: SLB Gradishar, MLB Katzenmoyer, WLB Hawk (you have no idea how hard it is for me to leave Spiels off)

P: Skladany
PK: Nugent
Returner: Chic Harley (I can't leave him off and still call it an all-time dream team)

Hard to argue with any of those choices. That's quite a team.

Spread Offense and a 4-2-5 defense..

QB: Troy Smith
HB: Archie Griffin
WR: Cris Carter
WR: Ted Ginn
WR: David Boston
WR: Joey Galloway
TE: John Frank
OT: Orlando Pace
OT: John Hicks
OG: Bill Willis
OG: Jim Parker
C: LeCharles Bentley

DE: Will Smith
DT: Dan Wilkinson
DT: Jim Stillwagon
DE: Vernon Gholston (For versatility I.E. Can drop back and we can play the 33 if neccessary)
SMLB: Randy Gradishar
WMLB: A.J. Hawk
CB: Shawn Springs
CB: Antoine Winfield
SS: Mike Doss
Bullet: Jack Tatum (Need a guy who can lay the m'fin wood and cover.. thats an understatement with Tatum)
FS: Will Allen (Need a great coverage guy here with excellent ball skills)

K: Nugent
P: Eh.. B.J. Sander
Returner: Ted Ginn

I took a guess with some of these since I haven't been alive for long enough to see all of them.

You better score 70 points a game with that offense, considering you have 12 players!

The only changes I would make would be Steve Myers for LeCharles Bentley (and I agree that's an agonizing choice) and Spiels for Katzenmoyer. I've got to go with 36's instincts over 45's athletic ability. It does no good to run faster if you run in the wrong direction once in awhile. It also helps that you're using "a blend of college and NFL greatness". Still a very tough call.

It might have been easier for me to go with a 3-4 defense and install Spiels in lieu of one of the DT's. Still not an easy choice, but I'd probably go with Wilkinson over Stillwagon.

While the DT's may be an easy choice in the 4-3, it was surprising to me that I couldn't find a place for Pete Cusick.

I was very tempted to swap out Paul Warfield for a more recent Buckeye whose blend of college and NFL greatness tilted more in the Buckeye's favor. But then I ended up being stuck between Galloway and Jenkins. After some deliberation, Warfield still gets the nod IMO.

That's ok. I doubt Jax saw Bill Willis play.

I defer to BB73 for first hand knowledge of anyone who played in the first half of the 20th century. (and the NFL HOF thing)

I was going back and forth between Myers and Bently, it was pretty much a coin toss. Tom Delone and Mangold were up there as well. Once a bit more time has gone by and he gets more and more recognition in the NFL we might very well look back and say Mangold was the best but for now LeChuck was just freaking nasty.

I took AK once I decided to fill the spots by actual positions instead of just the three best names. When I think of a Mike LB my first thought is having enough size and force to defeat blocks and control the gaps. As much as I love Spiels and Marek they didn't bring the load the way AK did. My second choice (and it was very close) for the Mike given my criteria was actually Pepper Johnson given how well he played an ILB spot in a 3-4 for all those years with the Giants.

Agree 100% on Wilkinson as the NG if you go 3-4. The perfect choice of course would be Stillwagons heart in Wilkinson's body. It was indeed tough leaving Cusik off but then again, I left 4 Heisman winners off.

I was tempted to use Galloway due to his NFL production but its hard to argue with a career 20.1 ypc average and that yellow jacket from being an NFL HOFer in Warfields favor.

Following your guidelines, and coming up with my own squad without looking at your choices - my only difference on offense was Boston for Warfield, who didn't really play out wide much at tOSU.

On defense, I had Spiels over Katzenmoyer, and Hopalong Cassady over Springs. On special teams, I went with Ginn as a returner.

Only 4 differences, and the only one that suprises me is you not having Spielman.

Offense

WR's: Cris Carter and David Boston (0 NFL HOFers, Carter's not in yet :wink2:)
TE: John Frank

OT: John Hicks and Orlando Pace
OG: Bill Willis and Jim Parker (NFL HOF x 2)
C: LeCharles Bentley (no, I didn't room with Gomer Jones)

QB: Troy Smith
RB: Archie Griffin (With Cassady on defense, only 3 Heisman winners were left off my list)
FB: Pete Johnson

Defense

DE: Vrabel and Will Smith (tough call over Van DeCree)
DT: Wilkinson and Jim Stillwagon

CB: Hopalong Cassady and Winfield
S: Tatum and Doss

LB: SLB Gradishar, MLB Sipelman, WLB Hawk

Special teams

P: Skladany
PK: Nugent
Returner: Ted Ginn (contrary to popular belief, I never saw Chic play)

Note: Today's players are stronger, faster, and in much better shape than players of years gone by. However, on the field they were just as dominate considering the competition.

Changes I'd make:

QB: Rex Kern (Troy was a better all around athelete, however Rex won a National Championship)

RB: Keith Byars (Archie had a better career; however, Keith's junior year he was the best).

LB: add Tom Cousineau, delete AJ Hawk. Cousineau was that good. He was a no.1 (overall) NFL draft pick. Unfortunately he played in the CFL so nobody remembers him.

Returner: Neal Colzie (nobody did it better than Colzie)

You obviously don't remember Paul Warfield from personal observation. He could get open, no question about that, but he couldn't catch a cold as a soph and a junior. Became a decent receiver as a senior on a team that just didn't pass that much.

Soooo, I'd go with Chris Carter and David Boston. Put Teddy in the slot?

TE, Ryan Hamby, hey, I taught the kid as a freshman.

OT, how soon we forget Kory Stringer, line him up with Orlando. Wow!

OG, Of course Jim Parker. Make Foley play the other guard

C, Lachey

QB, a really thin position for the bucks, Troy or Schliechter, maybe Tom Matte

RB, no question in my mind that the greatest running back ever to wear scarlet and gray was Keith Byars until he broke his foot. If you insist on going with Eddie George, then make Keith your #2 receiver.

FB, Pete Johnson, for shure

Defense - Vrabel and Will Smith,

Tackle - Wilkison is the buckeye version of Gabe Watson, ton of potential that just never materialized, never played a game all out. Make it Stillwagon and Willis.

Linebacker: Hawk, Gradishar, Spielman

Corners: Springs and Colzie

Safety: Tatum

Punter: Tupa

Kicker: Lou Groza...

What Cinci brings up about Warfield is true, albeit a harsh way to put it.

But since Jaxbuck's criteria included combined college and pro success, it's hard to go against Warfield's career with the dolphins (and I didn't). As I said in my first post in the thread, I wanted to shade my pick toward somebody who had more Buckeye success; but couldn't find anyone whose pro career was (is) close enough to make it a contest. Galloway is as close as I could come in my own estimation.
