My own personal OSU all-time "dream team"

Following your guidelines, and coming up with my own squad without looking at your choices - my only difference on offense was Boston for Warfield, who didn't really play out wide much at tOSU.

On defense, I had Spiels over Katzenmoyer, and Hopalong Cassady over Springs. On special teams, I went with Ginn as a returner.

Only 4 differences, and the only one that suprises me is you not having Spielman.

Offense

WR's: Cris Carter and David Boston (0 NFL HOFers, Carter's not in yet :wink2:)
TE: John Frank

OT: John Hicks and Orlando Pace
OG: Bill Willis and Jim Parker (NFL HOF x 2)
C: LeCharles Bentley (no, I didn't room with Gomer Jones)

QB: Troy Smith
RB: Archie Griffin (With Cassady on defense, only 3 Heisman winners were left off my list)
FB: Pete Johnson

Defense

DE: Vrabel and Will Smith (tough call over Van DeCree)
DT: Wilkinson and Jim Stillwagon

CB: Hopalong Cassady and Winfield
S: Tatum and Doss

LB: SLB Gradishar, MLB Sipelman, WLB Hawk

Special teams

P: Skladany
PK: Nugent
Returner: Ted Ginn (contrary to popular belief, I never saw Chic play)

The more I think about leaving Spielman off the sicker I get about it. I just said AK for the Mike because I believe he is still the most physically gifted MLB we've ever had. I also believe if he didn't hurt his neck he'd have a very nice NFL legacy to add to his resume. Alas, he's in the same boat as Cousineau and Hicks...dominant college careers and little to nothing as a pro.

A Lb trio of SLB Gradishar, MLB Spielman and WLB Cousineau certainly wouldn't be lacking for anything. Especially behind that DL.

What Cinci brings up about Warfield is true, albeit a harsh way to put it.

But since Jaxbuck's criteria included combined college and pro success, it's hard to go against Warfield's career with the dolphins (and I didn't). As I said in my first post in the thread, I wanted to shade my pick toward somebody who had more Buckeye success; but couldn't find anyone whose pro career was (is) close enough to make it a contest. Galloway is as close as I could come in my own estimation.

Sorry about treating Warfield that way. It was one of Woody's better coaching moments. He gave Paul a football at the end of his sophmore season, a seson when I recall at least three seperate moments when Unverfurth put the ball right on the numbers of a wide open Warfield and Paul dropped all three. Hayes told him he was to carry the ball with him to all classes and to throw it up in the air as he walked along and catch it and that there'd be hell to pay if he caught him on campus without the ball. In two years Warfield was ready to take his place as one of the NFL all time greats.

Soooo, I'd go with Chris Carter and David Boston. Put Teddy in the slot?

TE, Ryan Hamby, hey, I taught the kid as a freshman.

OT, how soon we forget Kory Stringer, line him up with Orlando. Wow!

OG, Of course Jim Parker. Make Foley play the other guard

C, Lachey

QB, a really thin position for the bucks, Troy or Schliechter, maybe Tom Matte

RB, no question in my mind that the greatest running back ever to wear scarlet and gray was Keith Byars until he broke his foot. If you insist on going with Eddie George, then make Keith your #2 receiver.

FB, Pete Johnson, for shure

Defense - Vrabel and Will Smith,

Tackle - Wilkison is the buckeye version of Gabe Watson, ton of potential that just never materialized, never played a game all out. Make it Stillwagon and Willis.

Linebacker: Hawk, Gradishar, Spielman

Corners: Springs and Colzie

Safety: Tatum

Punter: Tupa

Kicker: Lou Groza...

My list is a lot closer to Cinci's:

Offense:

QB - Art (I love Troy but Art was simply the most talented gun slinger to ever lace them up in Scarlet & Grey)

RB - Byars (The best all around Buckeye RB. If things had played out a little different he could have been their 2nd two time Heisman winner)

FB - Vaughn Broadnax (Homer pick here, but the team would be just fine with Vaughn leading Keith into the endzone rather than handing the ball off to Pete)

TE - Frank (Almost impossible to pass up Doc BUT Rufus Mayes will be coming in for 2x TE sets and on short yardage situations)

Z - Boston (Power sweeps to the strong side are gonna be ugly)

X - Carter (Think anyone can cover him in the flat?)

Slot: Galloway

OT - Pace & Stringer (Apologies to the honorable Mr. Hicks)

OG - The Jims (Parker & Lachey) - (Yes Lachey was a guard in college)

OC - Uhlenhake

Defense:

DE: Pickett & Vrabel (Smith isn't the best fit for the 3-4, Pickett is)

NG: Pitcock (I'll take effort over talent, so no Big Daddy)

OLB: Hawk & Kat (Andy was better on the outside with the freedom to head hunt)

ILB: Spiels & Gradishar (Run up that middle. Go ahead. I dare ya)

SS: Doss

FS: Tatum

CB: Springs & Winfield (shocker)

Nickel: Sensibaugh

K: Nugent
P: Tupa
Return Specialist: Ginn Jr.

QB - There's really not a clear choice here, with Smith (Heisman), Kern (NC), and Krenzel (NC) ... and if Boeckman manages to run the table this season, he'll be 24-2 as a starter with an NC to his credit ... so I'll go with the versatile Les Horvath (Heisman, perfect season in 1944). Maybe Terrelle Pryor makes this a moot discussion in a couple of years.

RB - Archie Griffin ... but if Wells has a monster season.....

FB - Bob Ferguson ... and second place isn't even close. The most underrated player in Ohio State history. If he had won the Heisman in 1961 ... like he should have ... then he'd be a Buckeye legend.

WR - Cris Carter is an easy choice, but it's nearly impossible to select a second guy from the following list - Boston, Glenn, Galloway, Holmes, Jenkins, Gary Williams. I'll go with David Boston ... strictly for the numbers. If we're going three-wide, then Joey Galloway is my third choice.

TE - John Frank ... probably the most uninspiring selection on this team, but we do need a tight end, I guess.

OT - Orlando Pace and John Hicks ... it's tough to leave Korey Stringer off the team, so he'll be my sixth OL

OG - Jim Parker and Jim Lachey

OC - Jeff Uhlenhake ... I don't like how LeCharles quit on his team before the 2002 Outback Bowl

DT - Bill Willis and Jim Stillwagon

DE - Mike Vrabel and Will Smith ... not too tough a call for me

MLB - Chris Spielman ... James Laurinaitis is closing fast, and he'll be my fourth LB in the 3-4 set ... Big Kat might not even make my top five

OLB - A.J. Hawk and Randy Gradishar

S - Jack Tatum ... the best Buckeye defensive player ever, IMHO ... and Mike Doss, for being a three-time All-American and leading the Buckeyes to the 2002 NC. If we're going "nickel", then career interception leader Mike Sensibaugh enters the game.

CB - Antoine Winfield and Shawn Springs ... two pretty easy choices

Kickers - Tom Skladany and Mike Nugent ... and no one else need be discussed.

ATH - I'll go with four guys here: Chic Harley, the first Buckeye legend ... Hopalong Cassady, a true two-way star at RB and CB ... Neal Colzie, somewhat forgotten now, but he was a great cornerback and a very dangerous punt returner ... and Ted Ginn, a threat to score on any play from anywhere on the field.

I'll put those 32 players up against the greats from any other team and like my chances.

Missing the cut: 1950 Heisman winner Vic Janowicz; 1995 Heisman winner Eddie George; 2006 Heisman winner Troy Smith; three-time All-American Wes Fesler; Biletnikoff winner Terry Glenn; Butkus winner Andy Katzenmoyer; 1994 #1 overall draft pick Dan Wilkinson; and several two- and three-time All American selections ... not to mention numerous other All-American and All Big Ten performers.

HOW CAN YOU FOLKS TOTALLY IGNORE LOU GROZA? Jesus, Mary and Joseph! there's a reason the kicker's award is named after the guy. If they gave him his All American Conference points he'd be among the top three or four scorers in the NFL. (and please note that it took an AFL Team three Super Bowls to defeat an NFL team, the Browns of Lou Groza crushed one of the all-time great NFL teams, the Eagles, in their first season as an NFL francise) Groza served in WWII, was an All American at OSU and an All Pro Offensive tackle as well as place kicker. He totally dominated the kicking game during his peak years, a man with out parallel in the rest of the league. That can hardly be said about Nuge. He's the first guy to kick the 50 yard field goal and he did all of this while playing full time on offense. I like Nuge as well as the next guy, but let's get some perspective here...

BECAUSE LOU PLAYED ONLY ONE SEASON AT OHIO STATE AND HE DIDN'T EVEN LETTER!!!!! Lou's NFL career was legendary, but he really didn't do anything at Ohio State - he certainly was not an All-American. And since the perspective of this thread is an OHIO STATE dream team, I can fully understand why Groza has received scant recognition.

Great Picks

The names mentioned here are all great picks. A few names that deserve consideration are: Tim Anderson-Spielman of course-Jim Lachey-Mike Doss was listed a lot, but he was so aggressive as in: Doss is coming to lay you out-Rex Kern-Tim Foley-and oodles more.

For me Frank Kremblas. He played both ways Qb and Db also punted at times and was a great man. I never saw him play but everyone from his generation said he was as tough as nails and a great athlete. (I couldn't help myself)

There you go again, using facts, logic and shit...

My question for those who saw some of the older FB's play:

Back then in Woody's offense my understanding is that the FB was actually the featured back. Would they give you the iso play lead blocking you need from FB for the power I?

I've personally always seperated Ferguson, Jim Otis, Brockington etc from Pete Johnson, Champ Henson, Broadnax, Sualua, Martin etc because it seems to me they were two completely different animals.

Am I way off base here?

This looks like the closest list I would put together. I was going to mention how could Ferguson possibly not be getting named myself. If we are using Pro success, Dante Lavelli at TE can enter in...he was another Groza, played only 1 year (albeit a really good year to play), but he is an NFL HOFer. I really don't understand all the love for Wilkinson...he was good but not that amazing, IMO. At WR I go with Galloway only because he's had such a long and productive pro career.
